5 Days in Riyadh: First-Timer Plan

Read this before you book. Saudi Arabia is under a US State Department Level 3 “Reconsider Travel” advisory over Iranian and Houthi drone and missile risk from the regional conflict active since February 2026, and the UK FCDO advises against all but essential travel to Riyadh Province, plus all travel within 10km of the Yemen border. No strike has been confirmed inside Riyadh city itself, and flights through King Khalid International can be disrupted, so check with your airline. Check the current US State Department and UK FCDO advisories before booking. This plan is written for a well-planned, precaution-first visit, not a “go now” one.
Five days takes the 4-day core , old and modern Riyadh, Diriyah, and the Edge of the World, and adds a second desert day at the Red Sand Dunes, a different direction from the Edge of the World and a very different kind of day.

Day 5: Red Sand Dunes
Morning
Depart for the Red Sand Dunes, about 45-70km north/northeast, roughly an hour’s drive, best October through March.
Afternoon
Sandboarding, quad-biking, or a camel ride, best done with a reputable operator who supplies the equipment.
Evening
Return to Riyadh for a final night, or an early departure the next morning.
Why do the Edge of the World and Red Sand Dunes on separate days?
They’re two different directions out of the city, northwest versus north/northeast, and combining them into one day means a very long drive with little time at either. Splitting them across days 4 and 5 keeps each one relaxed rather than rushed.
| Day | Focus | Rough cost |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Masmak, Souq Al Zal, National Museum | Museum free |
| 2 | Kingdom Centre, Al Faisaliyah, KAFD | SAR 138 Sky Bridge |
| 3 | At-Turaif, Bujairi Terrace | SAR 50-100 Access Pass |
| 4 | Edge of the World | 4x4 tour cost varies |
| 5 | Red Sand Dunes | Sandboarding tour cost varies |
Check the current official advisory again before finalizing either desert tour. For the shorter version, see the 4-day itinerary ; for more days, see the 6-day itinerary .
One concrete tip: pack a change of clothes for day five, sandboarding gets sand everywhere in a way the Edge of the World’s rocky terrain doesn’t.
