5 Days in Xian: The First-Timer Itinerary

Five days keeps everything from the 4-day plan (Terracotta Army, City Wall, Muslim Quarter, Mount Huashan, Shaanxi History Museum) and adds a fifth day at Huaqing Palace, close enough to Lintong that it’s easy to underrate as “just a garden.” Shorter trip? Day 1: Terracotta Army And The City Wall

  • Metro Line 14 from XIY to Xi’an North, transfer toward the Bell Tower, check in
  • Book the Terracotta Army ticket online ahead of time, CNY 120 off-peak (up to CNY 150 peak), no walk-up sales. Bus 306 from Xi’an Railway Station’s East Square, CNY 7, about an hour each way, every 7 minutes or so
  • Evening: bike the City Wall, CNY 54 entry, about CNY 45 for 3 hours (CNY 200 deposit). Bring your passport: the July 2026 rule requires a paper voucher and facial recognition for foreign e-ticket holders, per the official City Wall site

Day 2: Muslim Quarter And The Pagodas

  • Bell Tower and Drum Tower combo ticket, about CNY 50
  • Huimin Jie street food: roujiamo (CNY 8-15), biangbiang noodles (CNY 15-25), yangrou paomo (CNY 25-40), liangpi (CNY 8-15), plus the 742 CE Great Mosque
  • Big Wild Goose Pagoda grounds (CNY 10-50) and tower climb (CNY 25-30), then the free North Square Music Fountain show

Day 3: Mount Huashan

  • High-speed rail from Xi’an North to Huashan North, about 30 minutes actual ride time, CNY 54.5-56 second class, then a shuttle to the gates
  • West Peak cable car up (about CNY 140 peak), North Peak down (about CNY 80), covering the main peaks in 5-6 hours
  • Plank Walk in the Sky: ages 15-55 only, CNY 30 harness, 2+ hour queues by midday, arrive early or skip
  • Budget the full 10-12 hours; the mountain and its queues, not the train ride, are where the day actually goes

Day 4: Shaanxi History Museum And A Night Out

  • Book your timed slot at the Shaanxi History Museum through ticket.sxhm.com as soon as the window opens; admission is free but the reservation isn’t optional
  • Afternoon around the Bell Tower shops, evening at the South Gate night market or Defachang snack street

Is Huaqing Palace Worth a Full Day, or Just a Stop?

Worth a full day if you care about the history, not just the hot springs. Beyond the Tang-dynasty pools and gardens, this is the real site of the 1936 Xi’an Incident: the kidnapping and detention of Chiang Kai-shek here forced a Kuomintang-Communist united front against Japan, a genuinely significant 20th-century event most first-time visitors never hear about on-site.

Day 5: Huaqing Palace

  • Head east toward Lintong, similar direction and distance as the Terracotta Army, entry runs roughly CNY 120 (some vendors list lower tiers, confirm the current gate price before you go)
  • Walk the Tang-dynasty hot-spring pools and gardens, then find the building where Chiang Kai-shek was detained during the 1936 incident, marked and explained on-site
  • Take a short hike partway up Lishan if you want a view over the grounds before heading back into the city for a slower final evening
  • Farewell dinner back in the Muslim Quarter or near the Bell Tower before your last night

Skip a rushed final-day museum run and use day five’s afternoon as slack instead; five days of Xi’an’s pace, plus a wall bike ride and a mountain hike, is enough that an unstructured afternoon is the better call than one more ticketed site.
