Visitors often arrive in Tashkent expecting a transit stop and leave surprised by how much fills two or three days. The capital of Uzbekistan was reshaped after the 1966 earthquake, and that history shows in its spacious squares, tiled metro halls and Soviet-era concrete. Hazrati Imam and the new Center

Hazrati Imam Square holds the Barak-Khan Madrasah from the 16th century, the Tilla Sheikh Mosque and a Friday mosque finished in 2007. Next to it, the Center of Islamic Civilization opened its doors in March 2026. Its Qur’an Hall displays the Uthman Quran, relocated from the old complex in November 2025. The dome rises about 65 m. A reported 09:00 to 22:00 daily schedule makes evening visits possible, though it is wise to confirm before a Monday trip. Tickets are sold on iTicket and at the desks.

Clothing matters here. Bare shoulders and knees are not appropriate, women should cover their hair inside mosques, and shoes are left at carpeted doorways.

Chorsu Bazaar

The blue-domed hall dates from 1980 and is one of ten Tashkent buildings that UNESCO added to its World Heritage List in July 2026. Metro Chorsu puts you across the road. Shops open early, and the best bread, dried fruit and spice stalls are busiest in the morning.

Underground sightseeing

Tashkent’s metro stations are decorated like galleries. The best known are Kosmonavtlar, Alisher Navoiy, Mustaqillik Maydoni and Bodomzor. Photography has been legal since 1 June 2018. Passengers pass a bag check at the door. Do not point a camera at police officers or checkpoints. Cash tickets cost 3,000 UZS.

Eat plov

Besh Qozon, the Central Asian Plov Centre, stands in Yunusabad close to the TV tower. Plov comes from big cauldrons and often sells out soon after lunch, so aim for midday.

Tower and mountains

The TV Tower, 375 m tall, has a deck at 97 m and a restaurant above it. For a break from the city, Amirsoy opened in 2019, about 65 km out, with gondolas that reach 2,290 m.

Safety and timing
