Taking Kids to Wieliczka
What suits a child in Wieliczka depends mostly on age, so this page is organised by age band. The same rules apply to everyone: the mine is guided, the walking is long, and the steps count more than the distance.
Ages 0 to 4
Entry is free for children up to 4, and the Tourist Route has no minimum age. A lift brings everyone back from the deepest level, but the descent is on foot. About 380 of the route’s roughly 800 steps come in the first stretch, down a wooden spiral staircase to 64 m.
- Leave big prams at the surface. The Górnik building offers free luggage storage during opening hours, and automatic lockers are limited.
- A folding umbrella stroller is permitted. Nothing underground is set aside for parking one.
- Bags below ground must fit within 20 x 20 x 35 cm.
Ages 5 to 9
The best fit is Śladami Legend, the family tour for children from 5 to 12, where the legendary Skarbnik appears. Tickets start from about 105 PLN per person and are sold online. Time slots change, so view the calendar before choosing a day.
The standard Tourist Route also works if a child can cope with 2 to 3 hours on their feet. Torches and open flames are banned underground, and a guide keeps the group together.
Ages 10 to 12 and teenagers
From age 10 the Miners’ Route opens up. Children get a helmet, a lamp and a carbon-monoxide absorber and join a group of up to 20 for about 1.9 km. They need closed shoes covering the entire foot. Arrival must be 15 minutes early, or the ticket is lost. Both routes run in Polish and English, while the Tourist Route adds six more languages.
Food and toilet stops
Toilets are beside the Daniłowicz Shaft and in two places underground. Karczma Górnicza, a Polish restaurant 125 m below the surface, can be used mid-tour, and Bistro Posolone stands next to the shaft. Aboveground, the Hotel Grand Sal has a restaurant.
Burning off energy afterwards
- Park Adama Mickiewicza, about 9 hectares, with playgrounds and duck ponds.
- The Graduation Tower in St Kinga Park, 10 PLN, with a 22.5 m viewing tower. It is a place to walk, so do not treat it as a therapy for children.
- Solne Miasto, a leisure centre with a full-size indoor pool, saunas, a climbing wall and a cinema.
Children who want animals or a water park need a different day in Kraków, where the zoo sits in the Wolski Forest and Park Wodny Kraków is in the north of the city.
Costs
Standard prices begin at 119 PLN for a normal ticket and 93 PLN for a reduced one, and families can look at tickets from 294 PLN. Rates depend on route, language and season. The official Tourist Route page has the details, and tickets are on bilety.kopalnia.pl . Family outings from Kraków including transport can be looked up on Viator .
