Multi-Day Jamaica: Bases and Night Counts
Travel advice: the UK FCDO says every western parish was badly damaged by Hurricane Melissa (October 2025), and some communities still lack electricity or piped water. It also names areas to avoid in Kingston, Spanish Town, Savanna-la-Mar and Montego Bay, and the US State Department lists Jamaica at Level 2. Ask each hotel about repairs before you pay, and read gov.uk and travel.state.gov .
A stay of several nights in Jamaica works best from one or two bases. Rural roads are narrow and unlit, the FCDO advises against buses after dark, and a journey of 80 km can take well over an hour. Official tourism restarted on 15 December 2025, but services in the west and south still vary from one property to the next.

Kingston and the Blue Mountains
Give Kingston a day for the Bob Marley Museum (the Home Tour is US$25 for adults) and the Tuff Gong studio tour, and add Port Royal on another. Move around by hotel-arranged or JTB-approved taxi, because the advisories name several inner-city areas.
In the hills, Whitfield Hall is a hostel and coffee farm in St Thomas that needs a four-wheel-drive vehicle, since an all-wheel-drive car is not enough. The drive from Papine to Mavis Bank takes about an hour, and the road from Mavis Bank to Whitfield Hall about another. The hostel quotes US$120 one way from Papine for one to six people. The Jamaica Conservation and Development Trust also lists cabins at Holywell and Portland Gap.
Blue Mountain Peak stands at 2,256 m. From the Abbey Green trailhead, the route via Portland Gap is 9.3 km each way, about 7 hours out and back, and visitors pay US$20. Guests sleeping at Portland Gap set off around 3:30 to reach the summit for sunrise. Trails may have been damaged by the hurricane, so confirm conditions with the park managers first.
South coast and Treasure Beach
This stretch holds YS Falls, Appleton Estate, Black River Safari boats and Floyd’s Pelican Bar, a boat ride from Parottee in St Elizabeth. It is among the areas still recovering, so expect reduced services, and do not assume Black River town or Treasure Beach has returned to normal. Pelican Bar was rebuilt after the storm. Take cash.
North coast
Rose Hall, Martha Brae rafting and Luminous Lagoon cover the Montego Bay and Falmouth end, while Dunn’s River, Mystic Mountain and Chukka’s Seville Outpost cover Ocho Rios. Falmouth is about 35 minutes from Montego Bay, while Ocho Rios is about 105 km away and needs roughly 1.5 to 2 hours. Knutsford Express links the towns, and its branch list shows the stops. Portland and Port Antonio
Portland is home to Rio Grande bamboo rafting and to Reach Falls, open Wednesday to Sunday, where you should phone 876-276-8663 to confirm it has reopened. Boston Bay is the traditional home of jerk cooking. The status of its stalls after the hurricane is unconfirmed, so check before you detour.
Negril
Seven Mile Beach is about 7 miles (11 km) long, and Long Bay Beach Park charges non-residents about US$3 for entry, open daily from 9:00 to 17:00. Rick’s Cafe on the West End is open noon to 22:00 with live music and no cover charge. Divers leap from its cliffs and injuries are reported, so watch from the terrace. Several hotels reopened between December 2025 and mid-2026, and each should be checked directly. Stay off isolated beaches.
Linking bases
Negril, Ocho Rios and Kingston do not fit in one day. Montego Bay to Negril is about 80 km, or roughly 1.5 hours. Compare places to stay on Booking.com .
