Romantic Accra: Day and Evening Plans
Accra is a romantic city for an evening out, not for a resort-style beach week. Only a few couple-friendly places could be confirmed as open, so this page sketches one day in order, from a cool morning to a late set of live music, and then suggests a weekend away. Amounts are in cedis (GH₵), roughly 11.7 to the US dollar. Cards and mobile money (MoMo) work mainly at hotels and upmarket venues, so carry cash as well.
Morning: Aburi
Start early and head up the Akuapem Ridge to Aburi Botanical Gardens, about 35 km and an hour from the city. The gardens usually open from 8:30 to 17:00 and, at around 450 m, stay cooler than the coast. Avenues of royal palms, silk cotton trees and bamboo groves make a shaded place to walk and talk. A 2026 travel blog covers a visit, but the entry fee is not confirmed, so ask at the gate.
Afternoon: art
Back in town, the Artists Alliance Gallery at Omanye House on the Accra-Tema Beach Road in Labadi sells paintings, masks and carved coffins, and it is listed as operating in 2026. An hour or so is enough to browse together. Ask about prices before you commit to a purchase, and remember that this is a gallery visit, not a beach stop.
Evening: dinner and music
Osu’s Oxford Street, the local name for Cantonments Road, is the main dining and nightlife strip. Restaurants there open and close often, and several venues named online could not be confirmed as trading, so pick somewhere that is open when you arrive. Ghanaian dishes to look for include banku with grilled tilapia, red-red and kelewele, the ginger-spiced fried plantain that evening vendors sell.
For live music, +233 Jazz Bar & Grill is on Dr Isert Road in North Ridge. It hosted the Ghana Jazz Experience on 30 April 2026, as an event listing shows, so it was trading this year. Undated listings put the cover charge at about GH₵10 to 40. Live nights are not guaranteed every evening, so check the programme before going. Take Uber, Bolt or Yango home for an upfront fare.
A weekend lodge stay
Two places could suit a slower weekend. Ada Foah, about 110 km and two hours east, is where the Volta River meets the Atlantic, and its resort named Aqua Safari listed day passes in a 2024 blog at GH₵400 for adults. Bojo Beach, west of the city, is reached by a short canoe crossing of the Densu, with the crossing covered by the entry fee. The 2026 status of the resort and the fee at Bojo are both unconfirmed, so check before building a plan around either. Rooms across the region can be compared through Accra stay listings .
The sea is for looking at
Do not plan a swim, a paddle or a sunset dip at any Accra beach. The UK Foreign Office warns of rip tides and undertows on the southern coast that make swimming dangerous there, and the main beaches have no lifeguards. At Bojo the sea and the river meet, and the ocean side has rough water. La Pleasure Beach at Labadi was closed in October 2026 after its buildings were cleared, and readers should check whether it has reopened. Boat outings run on the Volta at Ada Foah and Akosombo rather than from Accra’s own shore.
Small safety notes
Mosquitoes bite at dusk and malaria is present all year, so use repellent in the evening. The Foreign Office’s safety page says pickpocketing and bag-snatching are rising in Accra, so keep phones and cameras out of sight on busy streets.
