Romantic Evenings in Mumbai: Views and Tea
Romance in Mumbai is thin on the ground and best kept small: one good table, one good view and one long walk as the light changes. The city is dense and loud, its beaches are crowded and often polluted, and the sea is not a place to wade or swim at any time of year. What follows is a short list of real options, ordered as a single afternoon and evening, plus one idea for a night away. Figures are in rupees (INR), at around 95 to the dollar.
14:00 to 18:30: afternoon tea at the Sea Lounge
The Taj Mahal Palace hotel serves afternoon tea in its Sea Lounge by reservation only. The hotel’s own site lists two sittings, from 2:00 to 4:00 and from 4:30 to 6:30 pm. Book ahead on the Sea Lounge page , and dress smartly for a hotel lounge.
Sunset: Marine Drive on foot
Afterwards, take a taxi along the Back Bay seafront and walk part of Marine Drive. The promenade is 3.6 km long, free and open at all hours, and the Art Deco apartment blocks behind it are part of Mumbai’s 2018 UNESCO listing. Stay on the pavement. The sea wall and the rocks are dangerous at high tide, and from June to September the city’s civic body publishes high-tide warnings and asks people to keep away from the water. Check a tide table before you go in those months.
After dark: a rooftop bar
Three hotel bars appear in 2026 listings:
- Aer, on the 34th floor of the Four Seasons in Worli
- Dome, on the 8th floor of the InterContinental on Marine Drive
- Asilo, at The St. Regis in Lower Parel, where sources give the floor as 37 or 40
Look at each hotel’s website for current dress and booking rules, and reserve for a sunset-hour table, which fill first.
A private sail from the Gateway
For something more unusual, small private sails leave from the Gateway of India. Oyster Sailing has listed small-group trips of up to 8 guests that board at jetty 5, and a second outfit, Gateway Sailing Club, is also known to exist. The listing found for Oyster ran only to 31 March 2026, so ask whether sailings continue. No price is confirmed, and a quote is the way to find out. Life jackets are compulsory on boats leaving the Gateway, and rough weather or high tides can cancel a trip. The event listing shows the format.
A night away in Alibaug
Alibaug offers a calmer base, reached by boat from the Gateway to Mandwa. A wooden launch costs about INR 280 to 300 per person, and a speedboat about INR 600 to 800. The monsoon pauses regional passenger boats, so choose a date outside June to September. The sea there is for looking at too: the UK government notes that most Indian beaches have no warning signs, flags or lifesaving equipment.
Practical notes
- Keep to busy, well-lit stretches of the waterfront after dark. UK advice on India says to avoid isolated areas, beaches included, when alone.
- A taxi meter starts at about INR 33. Autos start at about INR 27 and do not run in South Mumbai.
- Hotels near the seafront can be compared on Booking.com .
