How far you can go from Varanasi depends on how many hours you can spare, so this page is arranged by time. Distances are approximate road or rail figures, and fees, fares and train times change, so confirm them locally. Costs are quoted in rupees (INR), at a rate near 95 to the US dollar.

Half a day: Sarnath

Sarnath lies about 10 km from the ghats (published figures range from 8 to 13 km), which is 30 to 45 minutes by car. Local trains and buses also go there. An auto-rickshaw one way was quoted at roughly INR 350 to 400 in a 2023 account, so treat that as a starting point and settle the fare first. A half day is enough.

This is where the Buddha preached his first sermon, and UNESCO placed the Ancient Buddhist Site of Sarnath on its World Heritage List on 25 July 2026. Inside the archaeological park you will find the Dhamek and Dharmarajika stupas, what remains of the Ashoka pillar and the Chaukhandi Stupa, a brick mound topped by a tower from 1588. The Mulagandha Kuti Vihara, a temple completed in 1931, has painted walls. The museum shelters the Lion Capital of Ashoka, opens 10:00 to 17:00 and shuts on Fridays. Half a day: Ramnagar Fort

The fort sits across the river, about 14 km by road over the bridge, close to 45 minutes. Boats from Dashashwamedh take about an hour when they are running. Maharaja Balwant Singh had it built in 1750. Its Saraswati Bhawan museum displays vintage American cars, palanquins, weapons and an astronomical clock from 1852, and it opens 10:00 to 17:00. A longer half day: Chunar Fort

Chunar Fort is 35 to 40 km away (sources say 30 to 45), and the drive takes 1 to 1.5 hours each way. Opening hours and fees are reported inconsistently, so ask your driver or hotel before setting out, and expect to spend most of a half day on the road.

A full day, started early: Prayagraj

At the Sangam, where the rivers meet, Prayagraj is about 125 km by rail, around 1.5 hours on the Vande Bharat. It works as a long day if you leave at dawn. Look up current departures on IRCTC. The Kumbh Mela rotates among Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nashik and is never held in Varanasi.

Too far for one day

Khajuraho is about 400 km away and takes 8 to 10 hours each way, and Bodh Gaya is roughly 250 km by road, so both mean an overnight stay. Kaimur Wildlife Sanctuary is in Bihar, about 100 km away. Tigers are not resident there, so it does not make a wildlife outing.

Practical tips

April to June reaches about 45 degrees C, so leave early. The July to September flood season can suspend boats at short notice, which would remove the river route to Ramnagar, so keep the bridge road as your backup.
