Varanasi Stays of 2 to 5 Days by Calendar
The calendar shapes a Varanasi stay more than the number of days does, so start there and then fit the sights around it. Two to five days is the useful range. Amounts below are in Indian rupees (INR; about 95 to the US dollar), and fees and train times change, so confirm them before booking.
Dates that decide the trip
- October to March: the comfortable months, with the best conditions for early boats and long walks.
- April to June: very hot, up to about 45 degrees C. Sightsee at dawn and after dark and rest indoors at midday.
- July to September: flood season. The district stops all boats when the Ganga passes its warning level, as it did in September 2026, and the evening aarti has moved to rooftops in past floods. Leave slack in any plan and read local news.
- Late October 2026: the month-long Ramnagar Ramlila, an evening performance cycle, comes to an end. The next one is due in September 2027.
- 24 November 2026: Dev Deepawali. Rooms sell out and the ghats are at their most crowded, so book early or choose another week.
How the days can fall

If you want the temple’s Mangala Aarti, the pre-dawn ritual, you must report at 02:30 at Gate 1 with a ticket of INR 500 bought from the trust. The trust’s pooja list has every aarti price. Plan a late start the same day.
Pacing
The lanes, the heat and the crowds tire people faster than the distances suggest, so do not stack more than two big sights in a day. Keep the sunrise boat and the dusk aarti as the two fixed points and let the rest move.
Where to sleep
The Assi Ghat area and the districts south of it are calmer than the Dashashwamedh and Godowlia core. BrijRama Palace at Darbhanga Ghat is a heritage hotel on the river, part of the IHCL group since January 2026. Leaving town
The Vande Bharat to New Delhi takes about 8 hours, with the morning departure near 06:00 and no service reported on Tuesdays. A Vande Bharat to Agra Cantt takes about 7 hours and is reported as not running on Fridays. A Varanasi to Ranchi service has left at 15:55 since 2 September 2026. Check IRCTC for current times. The airport is about 25 km from the ghats, a 45 to 75 minute drive.
Two rules for every day
Do not bathe in or drink the Ganga, which is polluted. Do not photograph the burning ghats, and refuse anyone who offers to take you to a rooftop view, since that offer ends in a demand for “wood money”.
