Romantic Plans for Two in Varanasi
Varanasi is a pilgrimage city of crowds, ritual and noise, so it is not a conventional honeymoon spot, and the romantic options are few. What it offers a couple is a few quiet hours at the edges of the day: light on the river at dawn, a heritage hotel on the water and a fire ceremony from a boat at dusk. This page follows one day in that order and ends with where to sleep. Costs are in Indian rupees (INR; about 95 to the US dollar) and are approximate.
Dawn: two ways to share the river
Subah-e-Banaras is a free programme at Assi Ghat that begins before sunrise, so the clock time moves with the season. Over about two hours it offers Vedic chanting, a morning aarti, a fire ritual, classical raga and open-air yoga. It is a shared start to the day that costs nothing, and the official site describes the format.
If you prefer the water, book a private rowboat at Assi for sunrise during the cooler months, October to March. Quotes in blogs run from a few hundred rupees to about INR 1,500 an hour, so settle the total, the route and the length of the ride before you step in. Keep your hands out of the river, which is polluted and unfit for swimming or drinking, and do not photograph the burning ghats you drift past.
Midday: slow lanes and a long lunch
Heat builds quickly, and from April to June it reaches about 45 degrees C, so take the middle of the day indoors. Later, wander the old lanes for chai and kachori, and look at Banarasi brocade in the weaving quarters of Madanpura, Alaipura and Lallapura. Buy from a weaver’s own workshop and not from a shop a driver brings you to.
Dusk: aarti from the water
The Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat starts around sunset and lasts about 45 minutes. From a boat you see the flames reflected on the river and avoid the press on the steps. Reach the water 30 to 45 minutes early. Between July and September the district stops all boats when the river passes its warning level, as it did in September 2026, so check that boats are running before you count on this plan.
Where to sleep
BrijRama Palace, at Darbhanga Ghat, is a heritage palace hotel on the river and joined the IHCL family in January 2026. Its journal says guests can join dawn and sunset aarti boat rides, so ask what your booking includes. No restaurant or dinner prices were confirmed, so ask the hotel. The Brij Hotels guide to Varanasi describes the property.
The Taj hotels stand on the Nadesar Palace grounds, about 4 to 6 km from the ghats and away from the river, so expect a car ride through traffic and no river views. They suit couples who want a conventional luxury stay. Browse Varanasi hotel listings on Booking.com to compare other rooms and cancellation terms.
Manners for two
This is a place of worship, so keep affection modest in public and cover shoulders and knees at temples and on the ghats. Dev Deepawali on 24 November 2026 fills every room, so book early if you want that week.
