Romantic Munich: First Date to Anniversary
A gondola on a palace canal is a better opening move than any reservation. Munich suits romance at every stage, from a free first coffee to an anniversary dinner, so here are ideas by occasion.
A first date: coffee, stalls and a gondola
Sit on a bench under the lime trees around the Diana Temple in the Hofgarten, with coffee from a nearby bakery and street violinists for company. Then wander through Viktualienmarkt and step into the Asamkirche on Sendlinger Straße, a narrow Baroque church built by the Asam brothers as their private chapel.

A weekend away: gardens and water
In the Englischer Garten, walk at sunset along the paths near the Eisbach and keep going to a beer garden. The surf wave there is for experienced surfers only, so take it in from the bank as a view. For a day on the water, ships cross Starnberger See, and the October timetable runs one ship twice daily until 18 October and another at weekends. Times are at seenschifffahrt.de . An evening out: opera and dinner
The Bavarian State Opera performs at the National Theatre, and its festival fills June and July. Check programmes on staatsoper.de in advance. A table at one of the Michelin-starred restaurants such as Tantris, Atelier or Tohru in der Schreiberei costs roughly €140 to €250 or more per person for a tasting menu, and reservations are essential. A more relaxed alternative is pork knuckle at an Augustiner restaurant for €18 to €28 each.
An anniversary night: Füssen
Füssen, about 125 km south, puts you near Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau. A regional train takes about 2 hours 10, and the castle admits visitors by timed guided tour, at €21 (€20 reduced) plus a €2.50 online fee, via hohenschwangau.de . The Schwangau through-road is shut until about mid-December 2026, so approach through Hohenschwangau. You can look at Füssen stays on Booking.com and arrive the night before to see the castle early.
A winter evening
From 20 November to 24 December 2026, the Marienplatz Christmas market has 130-plus wooden stalls, a 25-metre tree and Glühwein. A second, medieval-themed market sits at Wittelsbacherplatz.
