Dammam Landmarks and Waterfront Views

Read this before booking (as of November 2026). The UK Foreign Office (FCDO) updated its Saudi Arabia guidance on 27 October 2026 and advises against all but essential travel to the country, and against any travel within 10 km of the Yemen border. Dammam is one of the cities its page names as facing a raised risk of Houthi missile and drone strikes on airports, military sites, ports and energy facilities. American guidance says to reconsider travel, and the US government told non-emergency staff and their families to leave Saudi Arabia from 23 October 2026. Insurers may refuse claims if you go against FCDO advice. Read the FCDO guidance and the State Department advisory , then check your airline and insurer. Reading the map

Dammam is not an old walled city. It is a port that grew with oil after 1938, so the sights are a waterfront, a major cultural centre and the older heritage of Tarout Island and Al-Ahsa. Dammam, Al Khobar and Dhahran form one urban area, and the stops below sit within a 20 to 30 minute ride of each other.

Ithra, Dhahran

The King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture, usually shortened to Ithra, is the architectural highlight and was designed by Snohetta. Anyone can enter the Center and the Energy Exhibit free of charge. Ticketed extras include the Children’s Museum and the guided tour from SAR 50. It closes on Sundays and its hours change by day, so look at ithra.com before you go.

The Corniche and Marjan Island

The Corniche is Dammam’s waterfront park. From it, an 1,800 m bridge leads to Marjan Island, the Kingdom’s first artificial island, where the spiral tower of about 30 m looks over the Gulf. Cafes, play areas and parks fill the rest of the island. Go at sunset from November to March.

Heritage Village

On the Corniche, Heritage Village combines a display of traditional objects with a restaurant and cafe. Visit Saudi lists it without an entry ticket, and the kitchen runs from noon until midnight, or 01:00 on Thursday and Friday.

Al Khobar’s seafront

South of Dammam, Al Khobar has a Corniche, Ajdan Walk with its shops and restaurants, and the Scitech science centre. Half Moon Bay, a public beach of about 18 km, lies further south.

Tarout Island

Causeways north of the city reach Tarout Island, with more than 5,000 years of settlement. The castle sits on a hill in the middle of the island and the old harbour at Darin lies to the south. A restoration plan approved in 2022 covers both, so look at the castle from outside. The area is the home of the Eastern Province’s Shi’a community, so visit quietly and avoid photographing religious gatherings.

Places to respect, not to tour

Neighbourhood mosques such as Al-Shatee, Kanoo and Al-Rayyan serve local worshippers, and non-Muslims should not expect to enter.
Cemeteries are private and solemn.
Refineries, terminals, ports and official buildings are off limits for cameras, and the Eastern Province is Saudi Aramco’s home region.

Practical notes

The money is the Saudi riyal (SAR).
Alcohol is illegal for visitors.
Cover shoulders and knees. Women do not need an abaya in the street.
