4 Days in Bratislava: First-Timer Plan

Day 1: The Old Town
Morning
Start at Hlavné námestie, the Main Square, and the Old Town Hall, which keeps an 1809 Napoleon cannonball embedded in its wall. Walk through St Michael’s Gate, the city’s only surviving medieval gate, up to its viewing balcony.
Afternoon
Visit the Primatial Palace, where the 1805 Peace of Pressburg was signed in the Hall of Mirrors, then wander the narrow Michalská and Ventúrska streets.
Evening
Order bryndzové halušky, the national dish of potato dumplings, bryndza cheese, and bacon, at an Old Town restaurant. Tip: book Old Town lodging only if you’re comfortable with weekend stag-party noise; otherwise the Danube waterfront area is quieter and still walkable to everything above.
Day 2: The castle and the UFO Bridge
Morning
Climb to Bratislava Castle, a 20th-century reconstruction of the pre-1811 Baroque original rebuilt from 1957. Museum entry runs roughly 10-14 EUR; the terrace view takes in Austria and, on clear days, Hungary.
Afternoon
Walk to St Martin’s Cathedral, coronation church of the Kingdom of Hungary from 1563 to 1830, then the powder-blue Blue Church, built 1908-1913 by Ödön Lechner.
Evening
Cross to the UFO Bridge observation deck, around 11.90 EUR, refunded against your bill if you eat at the restaurant on top. Tip: go around sunset for the best light over the Old Town and the river.
Day 3: Vienna day trip
Morning
Take the hourly REX train to Vienna, about 56 minutes, around 12.70 EUR each way, no reservation needed. Spend the day at your own pace in one of the closest capital-to-capital hops anywhere.
Afternoon
Continue in Vienna; the closeness means there’s no need to rush back.
Evening
Return on a later REX service. Tip: the seasonal Twin City Liner catamaran (April-September, about 75 minutes) is a scenic alternative if you’d rather go by river once during the trip.
Day 4: Devín Castle
Morning
Take a short local bus or bike ride out to Devín Castle, a ruined hilltop fortress right on the Austrian border. The Iron Curtain ran directly in front of it until the Velvet Revolution in 1989, and the Maiden Tower watchtower is the most photographed spot.
Afternoon
Walk the riverside path back toward the city if you’re up for it, or take the bus back and spend the afternoon at a slower pace in the Old Town.
Evening
A relaxed final dinner near the Danube. Tip: confirm Devín’s opening hours before you go, since the site’s schedule shifts seasonally.
