7 Days in Bratislava: First-Timer Plan
A full week is more than a first Bratislava trip strictly needs, but it means covering both marquee day trips, Vienna and Budapest, plus Devín Castle and a wine day, without ever feeling rushed. For a tighter six-day version, see the 6-day itinerary .
Day 1: The Old Town
Morning
Start at Hlavné námestie, the Main Square, and the Old Town Hall’s embedded 1809 cannonball. Walk through St Michael’s Gate, the only surviving medieval gate.
Afternoon
Visit the Primatial Palace’s Hall of Mirrors and wander Michalská and Ventúrska streets.
Evening
Order bryndzové halušky at an Old Town restaurant. Tip: book the quieter Danube waterfront over the Old Town itself if you want to avoid weekend stag-party noise.
Day 2: The castle and the UFO Bridge
Morning
Climb to Bratislava Castle, a 20th-century reconstruction rebuilt from 1957 after the 1811 fire. Museum entry runs roughly 10-14 EUR; the terrace view reaches Austria and, on clear days, Hungary.
Afternoon
Walk to St Martin’s Cathedral, Royal Hungary’s coronation church from 1563 to 1830, and the powder-blue Blue Church.
Evening
Cross to the UFO Bridge observation deck, around 11.90 EUR, refunded against a meal at the restaurant on top. Tip: go near sunset for the best light over the river.
Day 3: Vienna day trip
Morning
Take the hourly REX train to Vienna, about 56 minutes, around 12.70 EUR each way, no reservation needed.
Afternoon
Explore Vienna’s historic centre at your own pace; it’s one of the closest capital-to-capital hops anywhere.
Evening
Return on a later REX service. Tip: the seasonal Twin City Liner catamaran (April-September, about 75 minutes) is a scenic alternative if you’d rather go by river.
Day 4: Budapest day trip
Morning
Take the train to Budapest, roughly 2 to 2.5 hours, with fares from around 12 EUR booked ahead up to 40 EUR or more walk-up (verify current fares).
Afternoon
Spend the day exploring Budapest before the return trip.
Evening
Return to Bratislava for dinner. Tip: book the Budapest train a few days ahead where possible, since walk-up fares run noticeably higher.
Day 5: Devín Castle
Morning
Take a short bus or bike ride to Devín Castle on the Austrian border, where the Iron Curtain ran until 1989. The Maiden Tower is the most photographed feature.
Afternoon
Walk the riverside path back, or bus back and rest in the city.
Evening
A relaxed dinner near the Danube. Tip: confirm current opening hours before you go.
Day 6: Small Carpathians wine day
Morning
Head to the Small Carpathians wine towns, Svätý Jur, Pezinok, and Modra, granted free-royal-town status in the 17th century for their wine.
Afternoon
Visit a local wine cellar; a car helps if you want to string together more than one stop in a day.
Evening
Return for dinner in Bratislava. Tip: book cellar visits ahead where you can, since smaller producers don’t keep fixed public hours.
Day 7: A relaxed local day
Morning
Sleep in, then revisit whichever Old Town corner you liked best, or finally sit down at a café rather than passing through.
Afternoon
Shop for anything you skipped earlier, or walk Hviezdoslav Square down to the Danube promenade at an unhurried pace.
Evening
A last dinner wherever felt best over the week. Tip: if you’re flying out via Vienna rather than Bratislava’s own airport, confirm your bus timing the night before; the hourly service runs about 1.5 hours and airport-bound buses fill up.
