7 Days in Madagascar: First-Timer Itinerary

Seven days is the RN7 corridor done properly: Tana, Antsirabe, a full day at Ranomafana, a full day at Isalo, then a flight back from Toliara instead of redriving the whole 950km. Day 1: Antananarivo

  • Land at Ivato, transfer into the city
  • Afternoon on the Rova hill and through Analakely market
  • Early night, the RN7 push starts tomorrow

Day 2: Antsirabe

  • Drive the paved RN7 south to Antsirabe, about 3.5 hours
  • Afternoon pousse-pousse ride and a zebu-horn or gemstone workshop stop, plus a look at the 1922 Hotel des Thermes
  • Overnight in Antsirabe

Day 3: On to Ranomafana

  • Long drive day, Antsirabe to Ranomafana, roughly 6 hours, the single longest leg of the trip
  • Arrive by early evening, check into a lodge at the park edge
  • Early night ahead of a full park day tomorrow

Day 4: Ranomafana National Park

  • Full-day rainforest circuit with a mandatory MNP guide, confirm current entrance and guide fees at parcs-madagascar.com , 13 lemur species live here including the critically endangered greater bamboo lemur and the diademed sifaka
  • This is golden bamboo lemur territory, discovered here in 1986 by primatologist Patricia Wright, a find that directly led to the park’s 1991 founding
  • Evening guided night walk, a genuinely different set of nocturnal species from the daytime circuit

Day 5: Ranomafana to Isalo

  • Drive south on the RN7 toward Isalo, about 3 hours, via Anja Community Reserve near Ambalavao, a community-run reserve with the country’s highest concentration of ring-tailed lemurs, established by the local community itself in 2001
  • Afternoon arrival at Isalo, settle in and take a short orientation walk before the light fades
  • Overnight near the park

Day 6: Isalo National Park

  • Full day on the Isalo circuit, the Canyon des Singes and the Piscine Naturelle, a natural spring-fed pool that’s the trip’s best swim, are the headline stops
  • Ring-tailed lemurs and sifakas are common along the trail, and the sandstone plateau scenery here is a real change of pace from the rainforest belt behind you
  • Evening back at the lodge, pack for tomorrow’s drive and flight

Day 7: Toliara and the flight home

  • Morning drive to Toliara, roughly 2-3 hours from Isalo, with time for a look at the southern RN7 terminus town before your flight

  • Depart from Ivato that evening or the next morning depending on your international connection

Why not push on to Tulear/Ifaty’s beaches since you’re already at the RN7’s end?

You’re right at the doorstep, but 7 days is genuinely the wrong length to add it properly, Ifaty deserves its own day or two, not a rushed afternoon squeezed before a flight. Budget 8-10+ days if the beach extension matters as much as the parks.

Is the Anja Community Reserve stop worth the detour?

Yes, and it barely costs you time since it sits right on the RN7 between Ranomafana and Isalo. It’s also a genuinely different story from the bigger MNP parks, a community-founded and community-run reserve, not a government one, with ring-tailed lemur numbers that outdo anywhere else in the country.

Build one buffer day into your Toliara-Tana flight connection rather than a tight same-day international departure, Madagascar Airlines’ domestic reliability is the one weak link in an otherwise well-paced week.
