Krabi Adventure Tours: Know Before Booking
Every tour desk in Ao Nang has the same laminated board of island photos, and from the pavement the trips look interchangeable. They are not. Each one differs in hours at sea, in how hard you work, and in the cash you hand over on the day on top of the ticket. Here is what each adventure tour involves, so you can pick before a seller picks for you.
Hong Islands by speedboat
- What happens: the boat slips through a narrow gap in a cliff into the walled lagoon of Koh Hong, then lands you at the foot of a steel staircase of roughly 400 steps to a deck above the bay.
- Effort: short but steep, in full sun if the viewpoint comes at midday.
- Price: expect roughly ฿1,400 to ฿2,000 a head for a full day, lunch and masks included.
- Paid on top: the Than Bok Khorani National Park landing fee, reported at ฿300 to ฿400 for foreign adults, cash. The Hong Island park fee page sets out what one ticket covers.
You can compare Hong Islands speedboats on GetYourGuide and check that the viewpoint is on the route.
Phi Phi by speedboat
- What happens: a long crossing of open sea, a jump from the deck into Pileh Lagoon, Monkey Beach and snorkelling near Viking Cave.
- Effort: low physically, but the full day and the swell wear people out more than the climbs do.
- Price: about ฿1,500 to ฿2,500 per person.
- Paid on top: the marine park fee, about ฿200 to ฿400 depending on the source, in cash.
- Season catch: no boat may land at Maya Bay between 1 August and 30 September in any year. Outside that window you walk in on a boardwalk from Loh Samah Bay, and swimming in Maya Bay is banned year-round. Thai National Parks lists the park rules. To compare boats and departure times, search Phi Phi speedboat days on Viator .
Verdict: on a first visit, choose Hong over Phi Phi. You get the lagoon, the viewpoint and the snorkelling with far less time bouncing across open water.
Four Islands by longtail
- What happens: a wooden longtail hops from Koh Poda to Chicken Island and Koh Tub, ending at Phra Nang Cave Beach, with the Talay Waek sandbar exposed at low tide.
- Effort: easy; the adventure is a snorkel off Koh Poda.
- Price: about ฿800 to ฿1,200, half a day, with a national park fee collected separately.
Khao Phanom Bencha on foot
- What happens: a rainforest walk in Krabi’s highest mountain reserve to Huai To, a waterfall dropping over five granite tiers into cold pools.
- Effort: moderate, wet rock underfoot.
- Paid on top: ฿100 per adult and ฿50 per child, plus ฿30 for a vehicle, per Khao Phanom Bencha National Park .
Tab Kak Hang Nak (Dragon Crest)
- What happens: a steep trail that starts close to Tubkaek, crosses bamboo stands and bare rock ridges, and finishes on a ledge hanging over the karst.
- Effort: the toughest on this page, a few hours uphill and slippery after rain.
- Advice: start at first light, take two litres of water each, and hire a local guide if you are unsure of the path.
Questions to ask at the desk
- Is the national park fee included, and is it cash?
- How many passengers does the boat take, and is there a life jacket for each?
- What happens to my money if the sea cancels the trip?
Monsoon months, May to October, bring short-notice cancellations, and the Foreign Office links boat accidents here to overloading and rough seas; its Thailand travel safety page has the detail.

Tip: book island tours for the first half of your stay, so a weather cancellation still leaves days to rebook.
