Abu Dhabi Day Trips Planned by Drive Time

Travel advisory. Before you head out on the highways, note that the UAE is caught up in a live regional conflict. Iran has fired missiles and drones at the country since 28 February 2026, and debris from intercepted missiles has come down in parts of Abu Dhabi. The UK Foreign Office reports strikes and retaliation across the region since 8 July and warns of further escalation. The UK does not advise against travel to the UAE, and at the time of writing the US State Department rates it Level 3, “Reconsider Travel”. Stay away from security and military facilities, never touch missile or drone fragments, and go inside if an emergency alert reaches your phone. Do not film or post strikes or interceptions, which is against the law. Read gov.uk and travel.state.gov before you set off. These trips are described for a calm period.

The sensible way to choose a day trip from Abu Dhabi is by drive time. Al Ain, about 90 minutes inland, works as a same-day return. Sir Bani Yas and Liwa are each about 250 km away and are better treated as overnights. Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Grand Mosque, Qasr Al Watan and Yas Island are city sights, so they belong in your city days. Prices are in dirhams (AED, 3.6725 to the US dollar). Summer highs of 40 to 46 degrees C make November to March the best months, and an early start helps all year.

A day in Al Ain

Al Ain is about 140 to 160 km from the capital. The UNESCO listing Cultural Sites of Al Ain, inscribed in 2011, covers the oasis, the Hafit tombs and more. A workable order looks like this.

Morning: the oasis. Al Ain Oasis opens at 9am and closes at 7pm every day, and entry is free. It covers about 1,200 hectares with roughly 147,000 date palms and a working falaj channel, and its flat, shaded paths suit slow walking. See Visit Al Ain .

Midday: a museum or fort. Al Ain Museum charges about AED 47 for adults, and under-18s go free. Al Jahili Fort and Al Ain Palace Museum are described as free in several guides, but their hours are reported inconsistently, so confirm on the day. Al Ain Zoo calls itself the largest zoo in the Middle East, and ticket prices are on its own site. Wadi Adventure is in Al Ain, not in the capital, and its prices and hours differ between sources.

Late afternoon: Jebel Hafeet. About 11.7 km of paved road climb to roughly 1,249 m, and driving it is free at any hour. The upper stretch has no lighting, so be back down before dark. The summit is several degrees cooler and windy, and the Mercure Grand Jebel Hafeet sits there. Bronze Age tombs at the foot of the mountain belong to the UNESCO listing. See UAE Inform .

By car, bus or guided tour

Trips that need a night

Sir Bani Yas Island. The island lies about 250 km west. Expect about 2 hours’ driving to the Jebel Dhanna jetty, then a short boat crossing, so 3 to 3.5 hours door to door. There is no general entry fee, and Visit Abu Dhabi says the boat is free. Wildlife drives booked through resorts cost about AED 200 to 300 a person. The 87 sq km reserve has free-roaming cheetahs and giraffes. A same-day return leaves little time on the island, so plan a night. See Visit Abu Dhabi’s island page .

Liwa Oasis and Tal Moreeb. Liwa is about 250 km south, a drive of 2.5 to 3 hours, and Tal Moreeb is a further 25 km on a paved road. Carry water, check fuel and plan to sleep over.
