Beyond Dubai: Trips That Need a Night

Travel advisory: Dubai and the wider UAE were caught up in the 2026 regional conflict with Iran. During a roughly six-week phase in early 2026, Iranian drones and missiles struck sites in the UAE, including near Dubai’s airport and port and a hotel on Palm Jumeirah. A ceasefire has held since April, and Dubai’s flights, hotels, and attractions are operating and recovering, though the situation stays fluid (the current risk is mainly to shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, not the city). The US State Department has the UAE at “Reconsider Travel” and the UK FCDO does not advise against travel, but both flag the regional situation. Check the current US State Department and UK FCDO advisories before booking, and again before you fly. Everything below is written for a normal visit, for when it’s calm.
Every destination on this list punishes a rushed single day, which is exactly why it’s separate from the day-trips list: these three genuinely need an overnight to be worth the drive.
Ras Al Khaimah’s Jebel Jais, roughly 130km
Toroverde Ras Al Khaimah runs the Jebel Jais Flight, the Guinness World Record holder for the world’s longest zipline at 2.83km, suspended 1,680m above sea level with speeds over 120km/h, genuinely longer than the in-city XLine at Dubai Marina. Check current Jebel Jais Flight availability with the operator before planning the drive. RAK’s mountain retreats and eco-lodges make an overnight the natural pace here, and since it’s a separate emirate from both Dubai and Sharjah, it deserves its own night rather than a rushed add-on to a Fujairah day.
Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, one loop instead of two half-days
Cramming the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and Louvre Abu Dhabi into the same day as Al Ain’s oasis and the Jebel Hafeet summit drive means shortchanging one or the other. Both cities sit in the same emirate, roughly 1.5 hours apart, so a 2-3 night loop covers Abu Dhabi properly on one day and Al Ain’s oasis and mountain road the next. Oman: the fjords are a day trip, the capital is not
The Musandam Peninsula’s fjord cruises out of Khasab, dolphin-watching and snorkeling included with a stop at Telegraph Island, are legitimately day-trippable with a passport (original required) and border paperwork the tour operator handles. Compare Musandam fjord cruise tours on GetYourGuide before crossing the border with an operator you haven’t checked. Muscat, Oman’s actual capital, is a separate, farther trip, roughly a 1h15 flight or a 4.5-hour, 463km drive, and rewards a proper 2-3 night stay covering the old walled city, Muttrah Souk, the Royal Opera House, and the Grand Mosque. Treating a Musandam day trip and a Muscat multi-day visit as the same thing is the most common mistake in this category.
Verdict: give Ras Al Khaimah one overnight, pair Abu Dhabi with Al Ain rather than splitting them into two rushed days, and book Muscat as its own trip, never as an extension of a Musandam cruise.
