Frankfurt Day Trips: Which Ticket to Buy

The fare you pay shapes a Frankfurt day trip more than the distance does. Some towns sit inside the regional network, where one pass covers every train, while others need a separate long-distance ticket. Here is how each trip splits.

Trips covered by regional tickets

The Deutschlandticket costs €63 a month in 2026 and rises to €66.80 from 1 January 2027. It covers regional trains, S-Bahn, U-Bahn and trams across Germany, but not ICE or IC services. If you stay a month, it can cover several of the trips below. For a single day, ask the RMV app which regional ticket suits the route (rmv.de ).

Mainz, 30 to 40 minutes by S-Bahn S8 or a regional train, with departures every 15 to 20 minutes. The city is known for Johannes Gutenberg, who is credited with movable metal type around 1440. The Gutenberg Museum’s old building is closed, and an interim exhibition is at Reichklarastraße 1, so check the hours on mainz.de first. The Romanesque Mainzer Dom and St. Stephan’s blue Chagall windows are the other stops.

Wiesbaden, 35 to 45 minutes on the S1 or S8. The Kurhaus and its casino are neoclassical, and the Nerobergbahn, a 1888 water-ballast funicular, runs every 15 minutes from 09:00 to 19:00 until 1 November. Combining Mainz and Wiesbaden fits one day, because the towns are close together.

Rüdesheim am Rhein, 1 hour 10 minutes on the hourly RB10 regional train. The Drosselgasse is lined with wine taverns, and the cable car climbs through vineyards to the 1883 Niederwalddenkmal. The cable car costs €7.50 one way or €12 return, with the season running to 1 November, and it reopens from 19 November for the Christmas market (seilbahn-ruedesheim.de ). Rhine boats can be suspended when the river runs low, as in autumn 2026, so treat any cruise as a bonus and check KD or Bingen-Rüdesheimer before you travel. Without a boat, the train, cable car and viewpoints still fill a day.

The trip that needs a long-distance ticket

Heidelberg is about 50 minutes away by direct ICE, with roughly 26 direct trains a day. Fares vary with how early you book and how flexible the ticket is, so look them up at bahn.de . The castle and funicular combination ticket was listed at €11 for adults and €5.50 reduced from January 2025, so check the castle’s own site for the current price. Walk the Old Bridge, see the castle’s giant wine barrel, and climb the Philosophenweg for the view across the Neckar.

Choosing between them

  • Want the cheapest day with a pass in hand: Mainz plus Wiesbaden.
  • Want scenery and are fine with a hill: Rüdesheim on the RB10.
  • Want a castle town and happy to buy a separate ticket: Heidelberg.
