Romantic Frankfurt Through the Seasons
Frankfurt suits couples differently across the year. The city is compact, the skyline is dramatic and the taverns are warm, but what makes an evening work changes with the season. Here is how to pick.
Spring: a morning in the glasshouses
The Palmengarten, at Siesmayerstraße 61, is at its best in spring, when the beds outside come into flower and the glasshouses are warm. The 1869 Palmenhaus holds tall palms, and the Tropicarium recreates a set of climate zones, from fog desert to rainforest. Adult entry is €9, and tills open 09:00 to 19:00 from March to October. A rowing boat on the lake costs about €6 for 30 minutes. Check the garden’s own page for current hours (palmengarten.de ).
Summer: the tower after supper
In summer, the Main Tower at Neue Mainzer Straße 52 stays open later: Sunday to Thursday until 21:00 and Friday and Saturday until 23:00. A €9 adult ticket gets you up to the viewing terrace for the sunset and the lit towers afterwards, and the last ascent is 45 minutes before closing. The platform closes in bad weather, so confirm on maintower.de that the deck is open. Afterwards, walk to the river and cross the Eiserner Steg, a 170-metre footbridge from 1869, for the skyline reflected in the Main. The water is a view, not a place to swim, so stay on the bank.
Autumn: cider by candlelight
When it cools, the Apfelwein taverns in Alt-Sachsenhausen come into their own. Look for timbered rooms at Daheim im Lorsbacher Thal, open since 1803, or at Atschel. A Bembel jug of cider to share is the tradition, and Handkäs mit Musik at €6 to €8 and Frankfurter Schnitzel with green sauce at €16 to €22 are standard orders. Cash is the safer choice at many taverns. The quieter streets away from Klappergasse are the better bet for conversation.
Winter: the Christmas market and a warm room
The Christmas market runs from 23 November to 22 December 2026, Monday to Saturday 10:00 to 21:00 and Sunday 11:00 to 21:00. Walk through the Neue Altstadt afterwards, the 2018 reconstruction of the timbered lanes between the Römerberg and the cathedral. The Main Tower keeps winter hours, so on Sunday to Thursday the deck closes at 19:00 and on Friday and Saturday at 21:00. The Palmengarten glasshouses stay warm when the weather is wet. For a stay, compare Frankfurt hotels in the Altstadt or Sachsenhausen to keep the evening walks short.
