Kingston Day Trips: What Is Within Reach
Safety note, October 2026: The UK FCDO and the US State Department both warn about violent crime in Jamaica, much of it in inner-city neighbourhoods, and each names areas to avoid that include parts of Kingston. Take a licensed or hotel-booked car, keep off the streets after dark, and check gov.uk and travel.state.gov before travelling.
Jamaica is bigger than it looks on a map, and the north and west coasts are far from Kingston. The trips below are the ones that fit into a day, with a driver, and still leave time to enjoy the destination. Hurricane Melissa struck the west of the island in October 2025, while Kingston and the Blue Mountains lie in the east. Hurricane season runs through 30 November.
What fits into a day
The Blue Mountains at Holywell. From Kingston the road climbs through Papine, Gordon Town and Newcastle for about 26 km, taking an hour or a little more. The recreation area at around 1,200 m belongs to the Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park, which is a World Heritage site. Five trails are on offer, from the 250 m Blue Mahoe path (10 minutes) to the 1.3 km Waterfall trail (an hour), and the entry fee is US$10 per adult and US$5 per child on a JCDT page from March 2023. Hairpin bends and a narrow carriageway mean the driver should be experienced. Temperatures run 16 to 20 degrees C, so a jacket is needed. Ring JCDT on 876-619-9807 for current trail status.
Port Royal. A 25 km drive along the Palisadoes brings you to a naval town with Fort Charles and the Giddy House. For lunch, Gloria’s Rendezvous on Queen Street is the established seafood place, though a phone call first is sensible. A main course costs about J$2,500 to J$4,500. Boats from Port Royal continue to Lime Cay.
Spanish Town. The old capital, 20 km west, centres on a Georgian square with the Old King’s House, the Rodney Memorial and the Cathedral of St. Jago de la Vega. Go at midday with a guide or driver, because the FCDO advises caution in and around the town.
Hellshire Beach. Portmore’s fish shacks are 40 to 50 minutes west. Stay in a group and go by day, as parts of Portmore are listed in the US advisory.
Portland Parish. At 95 km and 2.5 to 3 hours each way, this is the longest sensible day. Calm bamboo rafting on the Rio Grande takes two to three hours for two people, costing J$12,000 for the long route or J$10,000 for the short one per raft under the rate fixed in September 2023. Boston Bay serves jerk, and Frenchman’s Cove is nearby, though you should check its terms before you count on it.
What is too far
Montego Bay and Negril are 3.5 to 5 hours away each way, and Falmouth is beyond three hours. Dunn’s River Falls near Ocho Rios is about 90 km, up to two hours by toll road, and is better as its own excursion.
Blue Mountain Peak
At 2,256 m, the peak is reached by a 9.3 km trail each way from Abbey Green, about seven hours there and back. Hikers set off just after midnight to be at the top for sunrise, pay US$20 and hire a guide on top. Dawn temperatures are 5 to 10 degrees C, with wind and fog.
