Luxembourg Walks by Length and Effort

Walks in Luxembourg are easiest to plan by length. A short stroll in the fortress quarter takes an hour or two, a day on the Mullerthal Trail covers one section of a loop, and the long trails stretch over several days. Because second-class trains, trams and buses are free (first class on trains is the only paid tier), you can walk a point-to-point route and ride back without buying anything. Distances come from official trail pages unless stated.

Up to a few hours: the fortress quarter

Chemin de la Corniche. The free promenade runs along the old ramparts from the Bock promontory, with the Grund below. It is short and flat, and it fits easily before or after another walk.

Wenzel Circular Walk. The Visit Luxembourg trail page puts this loop at 2.5 km and about three hours, rated easy. It starts at the Bock Casemates, with a high point of 305 m and a low point of 250 m. A longer variant of about 5.5 km is described elsewhere, so follow the signs rather than assuming the shorter distance. The Wenzel walk page has the route.

Vauban Circular Walk. This loop also begins at the Bock promontory. Its length is not confirmed here, so ask at the tourist office at 30 Place Guillaume II, open 09:00 to 18:00 Monday to Saturday and 11:00 to 16:00 on Sunday.

Walks underground. The casemates count as walking tours too, though they are paid and fixed-time. The Bock tour lasts one hour for up to 20 people and costs EUR 20 for adults, EUR 16 for students and seniors and EUR 10 for under-12s. The Petrusse tour lasts one hour for no more than 12 people and costs EUR 24 for adults and EUR 12 for under-12s. Reserve through the city tourist office .

A day on the trail

The Mullerthal Trail is about 112 km in three loops, with Route 1 at 36.7 km, Route 2 at 39.7 km and Route 3 at 37.7 km. The official pages split each loop into two day stages, so a day usually means a section. Options:

Walk a section of Route 2 or Route 3 to the Schiessentumpel waterfall and its 1879 stone bridge on the Black Ernz. The bridge is on road CR121 in Mullerthal village, about 500 m from the Schiessentumpel parking.
Try the local walk W7, 10.2 km from Heringer Millen to the falls.
Pick one of the five ExtraTours, which measure 22.8, 13, 9.3, 31.5 and 25.5 km, to match your energy.

The Kuelscheier rock passage on Route 2 is very narrow and pitch dark, so bring a torch. Wear sturdy shoes. To reach Echternach, take the tram to Luxexpo in Kirchberg and then a bus, about every 30 minutes, and check the line on mobiliteit.lu. Hunters are out from mid-October to January or February, so look at the hunt dates on the Mullerthal Trail map in winter.

Boat and walk combined

In season, a solar boat from Insenborn on the Upper Sure Lake joins an 8 km walk along the left bank, signposted ES 10. The whole amphibian tour takes 3.5 to 4 hours and costs EUR 5 for adults and EUR 2.50 for children. The boat runs from 1 May to 1 October, so it is closed now.

Several days

The Eislek Trail covers 107.29 km in five stages from Kautenbach to La Roche-en-Ardenne in Belgium. A regional brochure describes the Lee and Escapardenne trails together as about 158 km over eight stages, a figure to confirm locally. Across the north and east, stay on waymarked paths and never touch metal objects in fields or woods, because old munitions are still found there.

Practical tips

Pickpockets operate on buses and around the main station, so keep your bag closed there.
Winter daylight is short, so start early.
Trail paths and the Corniche are free. Casemate and boat walks have set times.
