Day 1: Little Mermaid, Nyhavn And Strøget

  • Reach Nyhavn by late morning, the 17th-century canal houses (built 1670-75) are free

Day 2: Tivoli Gardens And Vesterbro

  • Walk Kongens Have, the free King’s Garden surrounding the castle

Day 4: The Round Tower, Christiansborg And The Canals

Day 5: Christiania, Nørrebro And Reffen

  • Walk through Freetown Christiania in the morning, the notorious Pusher Street hash market was dismantled by the community itself in 2024, so this is a genuinely different, calmer visit than older write-ups describe, keep the camera away from residents’ homes
  • Head to Nørrebro in the afternoon, Time Out named it the world’s coolest neighbourhood in 2021, grittier and more local than Vesterbro
  • Visit Assistens Cemetery, the final resting place of Hans Christian Andersen and Søren Kierkegaard, locals genuinely picnic here, it’s free and worth an hour
  • Dinner at Reffen, the street-food market on Refshaleøen, 85-150 DKK a dish, open roughly spring through autumn only, check current dates before you plan around it

Is Christiania safe to visit in 2026? Yes, more so than the old guidebook warnings suggest. The dismantling of Pusher Street in 2024 removed the main safety concern that used to define outsider advice about the neighbourhood. It’s still an unusual, self-governing community with real residents, not a theme park, so walk through respectfully.

Is 5 days too long for Copenhagen? Not if you actually want to see Nørrebro and Christiania beyond a rushed hour. Five days lets you slow down on day five instead of packing everything into a sprint, and it still leaves the 6-day and 7-day versions room to add a proper cycling day.

Five days, two castles, one dismantled drug market’s aftermath, and a cemetery that doubles as a park, this is the version that finally gets past the postcard version of the city.
