| Day | Focus | From Copenhagen Central |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Settle in, half-day Malmo, Sweden | 35-41 min train each way |
| Day 2 | Full day at Roskilde: Viking ships and cathedral | 25-27 min train each way |
| Day 3 | Kronborg Castle, Helsingor | 46 min train each way |
Day 1: Base Yourself, Then Cross Into Sweden
- Check into a hotel within walking distance of Copenhagen Central Station, every trip on this itinerary departs from the same platform
- Buy tickets through the Rejsebillet app or tap a contactless card at the gate, the old plastic Rejsekort closes for good on 28 May 2026
- Catch an Oresundstag train to Malmo Central, 35-41 minutes, fares start around 150 SEK (roughly 110 DKK/€14/$15), and carry ID, Sweden’s Oresund border checks are random but real
- Walk Malmo’s Old Town (Gamla Staden) and Lilla Torg, both compact enough for a couple of hours, and remember you’re now spending Swedish kronor, a different currency from the Danish kroner despite the near-identical name
- Train back to Copenhagen by mid-afternoon, this trip doesn’t need a full day, and a relaxed dinner near your hotel to close it out
Day 2: Roskilde, Viking Ships And A Royal Cathedral
- Regional train from Copenhagen Central to Roskilde, 25-27 minutes, one-way fares from about 84 DKK, over 100 departures a day
- Start at the Viking Ship Museum , 160 DKK adult, five actual excavated Viking-age vessels, plus a 120 DKK sailing add-on May-September where you help row a reconstruction around the fjord
- Walk or ride bus 203 the roughly 1.5km/20 minutes to Roskilde Cathedral , 80 DKK as of July 2026, Denmark’s UNESCO-listed royal burial church holding more than 20 monarchs across 800-plus years
- Lunch in town before the train back, this is the best single day trip on the whole list, give it the full day it deserves
Which day trip is the best one to do first? Roskilde, every time. It’s the shortest train ride on this list at 25-27 minutes, and it packs two genuinely different sights, actual excavated Viking ships and an 800-year royal cathedral, into one compact walkable town with no second train required.
Day 3: Kronborg Castle, Hamlet’s Castle At Helsingor
- Kystbanen coastal train from Copenhagen Central, roughly every 20 minutes, about 46 minutes, one-way fares from around 78 DKK
- Walk 10 minutes along the harbor from Helsingor station to Kronborg Castle , entry roughly 135-150 DKK depending on the season, check current pricing since special events shift it
- Here’s the honest bit: there’s no evidence Shakespeare ever visited Denmark, “Hamlet’s castle” is a literary legend hung on a genuinely stunning 16th-century Renaissance fortress and UNESCO site, go for the castle itself, treat the Hamlet tag as the hook that got you on the train
- Summer 2026 brings courtyard “Hamlet Highlights” performances, worth checking dates on the castle’s own site if the timing works out
- Train back to Copenhagen in the late afternoon, and a proper final dinner near your hotel
Things worth knowing for this route
None of these three trips need an advance ticket, buy your train fare and entry same-day. Pack a downloaded train schedule, Danish regional and coastal trains run frequently, but missing one can still cost 20 minutes on a route with this much ground to cover.
