Day 1: Base Yourself, Then Cross Into Sweden

  • Catch an Oresundstag train to Malmo Central, 35-41 minutes, fares from around 150 SEK (roughly 110 DKK/€14/$15), carry ID for the random Oresund border checks
  • Walk Malmo’s Old Town (Gamla Staden) and Lilla Torg, compact enough for a couple of hours, spending Swedish kronor, not Danish kroner
  • Train back to Copenhagen by mid-afternoon for a relaxed dinner

Day 2: Roskilde, Viking Ships And A Royal Cathedral

  • Regional train to Roskilde, 25-27 minutes, fares from about 84 DKK, over 100 departures a day
  • Viking Ship Museum , 160 DKK adult, five actual excavated Viking-age vessels, plus a 120 DKK sailing add-on May-September
  • Walk or ride bus 203 the 1.5km/20 minutes to Roskilde Cathedral , 80 DKK as of July 2026, the royal burial church holding 20-plus monarchs across 800-plus years
  • Best single day trip on this whole list, give it the full day

Day 3: Kronborg Castle, Hamlet’s Castle At Helsingor

  • Kystbanen coastal train, every 20 minutes, about 46 minutes, fares from around 78 DKK
  • 10-minute walk along the harbor to Kronborg Castle , entry roughly 135-150 DKK depending on season
  • No evidence Shakespeare ever visited Denmark, “Hamlet’s castle” is a literary legend on a genuinely stunning 16th-century UNESCO fortress

Do I need seven full days for all six day trips? You need six travel days plus a buffer, which is exactly what this itinerary builds in. Each trip runs a half or full day round-trip, and stacking six of them back to back without a flex day is how people arrive home needing a vacation from the vacation.

Day 4: Frederiksborg Castle, Denmark’s Grandest Renaissance Palace

  • S-train Line A, 35-40 minutes, frequent every 10-20 minutes
  • 15-minute walk from Hillerod station to Frederiksborg Castle , entry roughly 125 DKK, home to the Museum of National History across Denmark’s grandest Renaissance palace and gardens
  • A deliberate solo-focus day, don’t stack this with Louisiana, each earns its own unhurried 2-3 hours

Day 5: Louisiana Museum Of Modern Art, Humlebaek

  • Regional coastal train, about 40 minutes, frequent, multiple departures an hour
  • 10-15 minute walk from Humlebaek station to the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art , 145 DKK adult / 130 DKK student
  • The building and sculpture garden on the Oresund coast are as much the draw as the collection itself
  • Train back to Copenhagen in the early evening

Day 6: Dragor, The Easy Half-Day Near The Airport

  • Bus 250S from Copenhagen Central, about 45 minutes, or bus 35 from the airport in 20 if you’re combining this with a departure
  • Wander Dragor’s preserved 18th-century fishing village, yellow cottages, orange-tiled roofs, a photograph-and-relax stop rather than a ticketed attraction
  • Use the afternoon as a real buffer, this is day six of six travel days, your legs have earned it

Day 7: Flex Day, Repeat Your Favorite Or Slow Down

  • Option one: repeat Roskilde, the best single day trip on this list, most people who do all six wish they’d given it two visits
  • Option two: the ambitious combo, Frederiksborg and Louisiana in one day is genuinely possible if you start by 8am, both routes run under 40 minutes and the towns are close enough on a map, but it’s a long day and I’d only recommend it to early risers

  • Whichever you pick, this is also your buffer against any earlier delay, weather can push the Viking ship sailing or a Frederiksborg garden walk, and day 7 is where that slack lives

Things worth knowing for this route

None of these six day trips need an advance ticket, buy your train fare and entry same-day. The one exception is the Viking Ship Museum’s sailing add-on, book that online first if the date matters. Consider the Copenhagen Card Discover (589-1,419 DKK for 24-120 hours) once you’re stacking this many trips, it usually beats paying per ride across a full week.
