2 Days in Copenhagen: The Gateway Itinerary
Two days is exactly enough to run Copenhagen as a launchpad instead of a destination: one easy half-day crossing into an entirely different country, one full day standing inside a Viking ship. Day 1: Base Yourself, Then Cross Into Sweden
- Check into a hotel within walking distance of Copenhagen Central Station, every trip on this itinerary departs from the same platform, so a 5-minute walk beats a 20-minute cross-town trek every morning
- Buy a Rejsebillet app ticket or tap a contactless card straight through the gate, Denmark’s old plastic Rejsekort is being phased out for good on 28 May 2026
- Catch an Oresundstag train to Malmo Central, 35-41 minutes, fares start around 150 SEK (roughly 110 DKK/€14/$15), carry ID, Sweden’s border checks are random but real even inside Schengen
- Walk Malmo’s Old Town (Gamla Staden) and Lilla Torg, both compact enough to cover on foot in a couple of hours, and note you’re now spending Swedish kronor, not Danish kroner, despite the near-identical name
- Grab lunch at one of Lilla Torg’s cafes, then catch the train back to Copenhagen in the afternoon, you genuinely don’t need a full day here
- Evening back in Copenhagen: a low-key dinner near your hotel, you’ve got an early regional train to catch tomorrow
Day 2: Roskilde, Viking Ships And A Royal Cathedral
- Regional train from Copenhagen Central to Roskilde, 25-27 minutes, one-way fares from about 84 DKK, with 100+ departures a day so a missed train barely costs you time
- Start at the Viking Ship Museum , 160 DKK adult, five actual excavated Viking-age vessels sit on display, and May-September you can add a 120 DKK sailing trip where you help row a reconstruction around the fjord
- Walk (or ride bus 203) the roughly 1.5km/20 minutes to Roskilde Cathedral , 80 DKK as of July 2026, Denmark’s UNESCO-listed royal burial church holding more than 20 monarchs across 800-plus years of continuous royal burials
- Lunch in Roskilde’s compact town center before the train back, there’s no need to rush this one, the whole point of a 2-day trip is that Roskilde earns its own full day
- Return to Copenhagen Central in the early evening, and if your flight or train home is the next morning, this is the right note to end the trip on
Is 2 days enough for a Copenhagen day-trip base? Enough for the two best trips, not enough for all six. Two days gets you a genuine international crossing (Malmo) plus the single best day trip on this list (Roskilde). Kronborg, Frederiksborg, Louisiana, and Dragor all need a longer trip, see the 3-day version if you can spare one more day.
A few things worth knowing: none of these trips need an advance ticket, buy your train fare and entry fee same-day. Pack a downloaded train schedule, Danish regional trains run frequently but missing one can still cost 20 minutes you don’t get back on a tight 2-day trip.
