5 Days in Vancouver: First-Timer Itinerary

Day 1 Stanley Park, the Seawall, English Bay

Day 1: Stanley Park And The Seawall

  • Canada Line from YVR into downtown, about 25 minutes, roughly CAD 9.35 total with the AddFare; check into a downtown or West End hotel
  • Walk or bike the Seawall, close to 9km, past the totem poles at Brockton Point
  • English Bay for sunset, dinner along Denman or Robson Street

Day 2: Gastown, Chinatown, And Yaletown

  • Gastown’s steam clock, then better food a block off the main strip
  • Chinatown’s Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden and dim sum for lunch
  • Yaletown for dinner along False Creek in the evening

Day 3: Granville Island And Kitsilano

  • Granville Island Public Market by Aquabus, free to wander, a full morning
  • Kitsilano Beach and Kitsilano Pool in the afternoon
  • Dinner on West 4th Avenue

Day 4: The North Shore

  • SeaBus to Lonsdale Quay, about 12 minutes, then one bridge: Lynn Canyon (free) or Capilano Suspension Bridge Park (roughly CAD 75-80)
  • Grouse Mountain Skyride in the afternoon, roughly CAD 86-89, for the mountaintop viewpoint and wildlife refuge
  • Return downtown for dinner

Do I need a full day for the Museum of Anthropology? Not the whole day, but budget half of one once transit is included. MOA reopened 13 June 2024 after its seismic upgrade, adult admission is CAD 26, and 40-50 minutes each way by bus (or about 25 by car) is the real time cost, not the museum itself.

Day 5: Museum Of Anthropology And UBC

  • Bus 99 or 44 out to UBC, about 40-50 minutes from downtown, or drive in roughly 25
  • Museum of Anthropology , CAD 26 adult, budget 90 minutes to two hours for the Great Hall and the Multiversity Galleries alone
  • Nitobe Memorial Garden, roughly CAD 7 entry, free Monday mornings, a genuinely authentic Japanese garden
  • If the weather holds, walk part of Pacific Spirit Regional Park’s 73km of trails, or view Wreck Beach from the clifftop above it
  • Head back into the city for a final dinner, Salmon n’ Bannock in Fairview is a strong pick for Indigenous Canadian cuisine to close out the museum day thematically

Where To Stay

  • Downtown/West End: closest to Stanley Park, and a reasonable single base even with the UBC day factored in
  • Gastown: closer to the SeaBus for the North Shore day
  • Kitsilano: closer to the bus routes out to UBC than downtown is

What does 5 days in Vancouver cost? Budget CAD 120-180 a day mid-range per person, plus roughly CAD 86-89 for Grouse Mountain, CAD 26 for MOA, and either free (Lynn Canyon) or CAD 75-80 (Capilano) for the bridge day. That’s the full city-only budget, before any gateway day trip.

Transportation

  • Canada Line for the airport; a Compass Card or tap-to-pay covers SkyTrain, SeaBus, and buses
  • Bus 99 or 44 is the direct route to UBC and MOA, no SkyTrain reaches campus
  • SeaBus is the North Shore link, about 12 minutes

Tips

  • Do the UBC day on a clear day if you can, the campus and Nitobe Garden are much better in decent weather
  • Book Grouse Mountain and Capilano (if chosen) online ahead of a summer visit
