5 Days in Vancouver: The BC Day-Trip Base
Five days keeps the North Shore, Sea-to-Sky, Victoria, and Richmond days from the 4-day version, then goes back to Whistler for a second, deeper day, this time with a real overnight option instead of a rushed car-and-back. Doing it tighter? Drop to 2 , 3 , or 4 days . Have more time? Step up to 6 or 7 days .

| Day 5 | Whistler, deeper (hiking, biking, or an overnight) | ~120-125km/~2h, no passenger rail |
Day 1: The North Shore, BC Outdoors 20 Minutes Away
- Land at YVR, Canada Line downtown in about 25 minutes, check into a downtown or Gastown hotel
- Capilano Suspension Bridge Park (roughly CAD 75-80) or the free Lynn Canyon Park bridge
- Grouse Mountain Skyride in the afternoon, book ahead, current hours at grousemountain.com
Day 2: Sea-to-Sky, Squamish and Whistler
- Depart by 8am, 120-125km and about 2 hours to Whistler, no rail, self-drive, shuttle, or tour
- Sea to Sky Gondola in Squamish (roughly CAD 62-76 online through seatoskygondola.com )
- Whistler Village for lunch and a walk (check whistler.com ), this is the introductory pass, day 5 goes deeper
Day 3: Victoria and Butchart Gardens, BC’s Capital
- BC Ferries Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay, 95 minutes, 3.5-4 hours each way door to door, an 8+ hour round trip
- The Harbour Air floatplane (roughly CAD 357 one-way, 35 minutes) is the time-fix, check harbourair.com
- Walk the Inner Harbour, then Butchart Gardens by a further transit leg
- Book the combined tour through Viator
Day 4: Richmond, Steveston, and a BC Cider Stop
- Canada Line to Richmond, 25-30 minutes, then a further bus or drive to Steveston, about 55 minutes total
- Richmond’s dim sum genuinely beats downtown Chinatown’s, a real reason to make the trip beyond the scenery
- Steveston’s fishing harbour and the Gulf of Georgia Cannery, then a Fraser Valley cider or wine stop on the way back
Day 5: Whistler, Deeper (Or Stay Overnight)
- Back up Highway 99, same 120-125km, roughly 2 hours; this time skip the sightseeing pace and pick one real activity, hiking or mountain biking in summer, the Peak 2 Peak Gondola linking Whistler and Blackcomb year-round
- A ski day specifically rewards staying the night rather than a single-day car-and-back, book Whistler accommodation (link above) if winter conditions or a full mountain day are the plan
- Is the Sea to Sky Gondola worth stopping for twice? If you’re driving up again, yes, a short repeat stop for a different trail or the suspension bridge at the summit adds under an hour
- Winter drivers should check conditions before committing, this stretch runs 4+ hours in a storm, an overnight removes that risk entirely, HelloBC posts current road advisories worth a check before you leave
Where to Stay
- Downtown or Gastown: the base for days 1, 3, and 4
- Whistler Village: worth one night if day 5 turns into a real ski or hiking day rather than a return drive
Things to Know
- Currency is CAD, roughly 1.36-1.40 per USD
- No passenger rail reaches Whistler at all, plan around a car, shuttle, or tour both times you go up
- BC Ferries reservations matter for vehicles heading to Victoria in summer
Transportation
- Canada Line covers YVR, Richmond, and Steveston’s approach; BC Ferries or Harbour Air covers Victoria; a car, shuttle, or tour covers both Sea-to-Sky days
- Check discovercars.com if you’re driving up to Whistler twice, a rental pays for itself over two separate tour bookings
Tips
- Book Whistler accommodation early if day 5 becomes an overnight, summer weekends and any winter weekend both sell out fast
- Reserve the BC Ferries vehicle spot as soon as your Victoria date is set
- Five days is enough to genuinely feel BC’s range, mountains, capital, farmland, and coast, without any single day feeling rushed
Book the Whistler overnight the same week you land, not after day 2’s teaser, rooms tighten fast once the weather forecast looks good.
