2 Days in Vancouver: Cross-Canada Gateway

Two days is enough to prove Vancouver is Canada’s Pacific gateway without burning a full week on it: an easy Richmond day to shake off jet lag and get the Canadian dollar straight in your head, then a North Shore day that shows off the mountains right behind downtown. Day 1: Richmond, Canada’s Cheapest Lesson in Currency

  • Land at YVR, take the Canada Line downtown first to drop bags (about 25 minutes, roughly CAD 9.35 total once the 1-zone fare and the YVR AddFare stack together), then double back on the same line to Richmond’s Brighouse Station, another 15-20 minutes
  • Richmond genuinely runs a stronger, cheaper dim sum scene than downtown Vancouver’s own Chinatown, Parker Place mall on No. 3 Road is the easiest place to start and a fast way to learn what CAD 15-20 actually buys here
  • Push on to Steveston, a further bus or short drive, for a working fishing harbour and the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site, a genuinely free, unhurried waterfront walk
  • Which Vancouver am I in right now? This one: British Columbia, Canada, Pacific coast, Canadian dollars. If a listing quoted you US dollars or mentioned Portland, that was Vancouver, Washington, a different city entirely
  • Check into your downtown or Gastown hotel by evening, dinner along Denman Street or in Gastown both work without much planning on night one

Day 2: The North Shore, Mountains Behind Downtown

  • Cross Lions Gate Bridge or take the SeaBus to North Vancouver, then choose one suspension bridge, not both: Capilano Suspension Bridge Park runs roughly CAD 75-80 and adds Treetops Adventure and the Cliffwalk, or skip the fee entirely at Lynn Canyon Park, whose 1912 suspension bridge is genuinely free, no ticket booth anywhere
  • Ride the Grouse Mountain Skyride in the afternoon (roughly CAD 86-89), current hours at grousemountain.com , book ahead through GetYourGuide to skip the gate line in summer
  • Head back downtown before a 4-6pm crossing, bridge traffic on Lions Gate or the Second Narrows piles up fast at rush hour
  • Close the trip with dinner in Yaletown or back in Gastown, whichever neighborhood you haven’t seen yet

Where to Stay

  • Downtown or Gastown: closest to the Canada Line in both directions, Richmond one way and the North Shore the other
  • Richmond: worth it only if an early flight follows day 2, otherwise downtown saves a transfer

Things to Know

  • Currency is CAD, expect the exchange to sit around 1.36-1.40 per USD, don’t assume parity with a US dollar price tag
  • GST plus PST run about 12% combined on restaurant meals, added at the till, and 15-20% tipping on the pre-tax total is standard
  • No passenger rail reaches Whistler or the Rockies from here, both are separate multi-hour or multi-day trips covered in the longer versions of this itinerary

Transportation

  • The Canada Line covers YVR, downtown, and Richmond on one line, a genuinely efficient use of two gateway destinations in one fare zone
  • SeaBus plus a local bus reaches the North Shore without a car, about 12 minutes across Burrard Inlet, schedules at translink.ca
  • Check discovercars.com if a rental beats juggling transit for both days

Tips

  • Do Richmond first, not the North Shore, it’s the gentler day and the better cure for jet lag after a long flight
  • Choosing Lynn Canyon over Capilano saves roughly CAD 75-80 outright without losing much of the North Shore experience
  • Two days only samples Canada’s Pacific gateway, Whistler, Victoria, and the Rockies-by-rail hook all wait on the longer itineraries in this family
