Helsinki’s best activities keep very different hours, so a good day lines each one up with its opening window. Prices below are in euros, and the city is close to cashless, so a card or phone covers everything.
Early morning: sea pool and library
Allas Sea Pool beside Market Square opens at 06:30 on weekdays and 08:00 at weekends, and runs until 21:00. A two-hour ticket is €19 from Monday to Thursday and on Friday until 14:00, and €24 from Friday at 14:00 through Sunday. The complex has a heated freshwater pool at 27°C, a seawater pool at Baltic temperature and five saunas. Early slots are the quietest; online tickets can be bought up to two weeks ahead on allaspool.fi .
Oodi Central Library at Töölönlahdenkatu 4 opens at 08:00 on weekdays and 10:00 at weekends, and entry to all three floors is free. The top floor has a reading hall under a white wave ceiling and a terrace facing Parliament. Hours are listed on oodihelsinki.fi .
Late morning: the fortress island
The public HSL ferry to Suomenlinna leaves from Market Square and takes about 15 minutes. It uses an ordinary AB ticket, €3.30 in the HSL app or on a card and €3.50 contactless, valid for 80 minutes. Boats run every 15 to 30 minutes in summer and every 40 to 60 minutes in winter, so check the return time before you wander off. The island is free to walk: grassy bastions, artillery tunnels (bring a phone torch), the granite King’s Gate and one of the world’s oldest working dry docks. Afternoon: rock church and wood-fired sauna
Temppeliaukio Rock Church at Lutherinkatu 3 in Töölö is open daily and costs about €8 at the door, with under-18s free. Natural light enters through a ring of skylights around a copper dome, and the bare granite walls give the room its famous acoustics. Buy at the door or from temppeliaukionkirkko.fi rather than through a reseller.
Kotiharjun Sauna at Harjutorinkatu 1 in Kallio has been heating with wood since 1928. Entry is €16 (€13 concession, €9 for ages 12 to 16). It is open Tuesday to Sunday from 14:00 to 20:00, bathing continues until 21:30, and it is closed on Mondays. Men and women use separate saunas. Details are at kotiharjunsauna.fi .
Evening: Löyly on the waterfront
Löyly at Hernesaarenranta 4 is a timber-clad building with a smoke sauna, a wood-burning sauna and a ladder into the sea. Two hours cost €29, including a towel, seat liner and shampoo; an extra hour is €12 and swimsuit hire is €8. Booking is recommended on loylyhelsinki.fi . Finish on the outdoor deck.
Safety and savings
From late autumn to early spring, pavements and granite steps can carry thin black ice. Wear boots with deep tread, or buy slip-on grips (liukuesteet) from a pharmacy for roughly €15 to €25. A plunge into near-freezing sea is a cold shock, so go where staff are on hand and enter slowly. Tap water is excellent, so carry a refillable bottle.
