Helsinki Sightseeing by Weather and Light
Helsinki Sightseeing by Weather and Light
In Helsinki the weather and the hours of daylight decide the order of the sights more than the map does. Here is a plan for each kind of day, with euro prices.
Clear days: squares and monuments
Start on Senate Square, where Carl Ludvig Engel’s ensemble (the Government Palace, the university and the national library) faces the white cathedral. A flight of 47 granite steps leads up to its entrance, and the Alexander II statue stands in the middle. Helsinki Cathedral charges an entry fee of about €8 to €10 for adults; under-18s and the crypt are free (helsingintuomiokirkko.fi ).
In Sibelius Park in Töölö, the Sibelius Monument, made of more than 600 steel pipes, was unveiled in 1967 and is a free outdoor visit. Uspenski Cathedral on Katajanokka, finished in 1868, shows off 13 gold cupolas against a clear sky, and inside it costs €5 for adults outside services and is closed on Mondays (hos.fi ).
Grey and wet days: indoors
Helsinki Central Station, opened in 1919 and designed by Eliel Saarinen, is free to enter, and its four granite Lantern Men flank the main arch. Oodi library, with free entry and a top floor under a cloud-shaped ceiling, is open until 21:00 on weekdays (oodihelsinki.fi ). Temppeliaukio Rock Church, about €8, is open daily and its skylights still light the room on a dull day (temppeliaukionkirkko.fi ).
Kiasma and the Ateneum are open Tuesday to Sunday; tickets are €21 online and €23 at the door (kiasma.fi , ateneum.fi ).
Short winter days
Around the winter solstice the sun rises near 09:24 and sets near 15:12, leaving about five hours and 48 minutes of daylight. Keep outdoor sights for midday and put museums and Oodi after dark. Black ice can hide on granite steps and cobbles from November to March, so wear boots with deep grooves or buy slip-on grips (liukuesteet) at a pharmacy for roughly €15 to €25.
Long summer evenings
From late spring the light lingers late into the night, and Esplanadi, the harbour and Kaivopuisto are pleasant at dusk. Seurasaari’s open-air museum runs from mid-May to mid-September; take bus 24 and cross the footbridge.
