Helsinki Family Activities by Age
Helsinki Family Activities by Age
Helsinki works for families when the plan fits the age of the youngest child. The reliable options are sorted below by age band, with prices in euros and a few notes for cold days.
Under 6: short, warm and close together
Allas Sea Pool beside Market Square has a children’s pool and a heated freshwater pool at 27°C, with passenger ferries gliding past. Child tickets (ages 3 to 12) are €11 on weekdays and €14 at weekends for the two-hour session (allaspool.fi ).
Oodi Central Library is free to enter on all three floors and has a cafe on the ground floor and open reading space above. Hours are on oodihelsinki.fi .
The ferry to Suomenlinna is an outing in itself: about 15 minutes on an AB ticket (€3.30 app, €3.50 contactless). Linnanmäki is a summer park, open from spring to early autumn, with an October event; the Pikkuhupi wristband covers 18 family rides. Everyone aged 3 and over needs a ticket or wristband, so look at linnanmaki.fi for dates.
Ages 7 to 12: animals, tunnels and rides
Korkeasaari Zoo, founded in 1889 on its own island, keeps snow leopards, Amur tigers, wolverines, European brown bears and forest reindeer, plus two tropical greenhouses called Africasia and Amazonia. Tickets are priced dynamically, roughly €22 to €29 for adults and €0 to €20 for children, and the zoo is open daily. Take tram 13 from Kalasatama metro to the Nihti stop and cross the Finkensilta bridge (korkeasaari.fi ).
Suomenlinna’s ramparts, big coastal cannons and dark stone tunnels suit this age well. In summer the toy museum shows tin toys, teddy bears and dollhouses, so check suomenlinna.fi for its season and prices.
At Linnanmäki, the 1951 wooden Vuoristorata coaster still has a brakeman riding each train. The Isohupi wristband costs €53.
Ages 12 to 16: rides, making and steam
Teenagers can ride the Taiga coaster at Linnanmäki in season. Oodi’s second floor is a public makerspace with 3D printers, laser cutters, music studios and VR rooms, listed on the library site. At Kotiharjun Sauna in Kallio, ages 12 to 16 pay €9 (adults €16); it is open Tuesday to Sunday from 14:00 to 20:00 (kotiharjunsauna.fi ).
Cold or icy days
Families wanting a hotel near the harbour can search Helsinki hotels on Booking.com .
Black ice forms on pavements and steps between late autumn and early spring, so pack boots with deep tread. Keep sea swimming for adults, with staff close by. A water bottle can be refilled from any tap.
