Helsinki Romance on Three Budgets
Helsinki Romance on Three Budgets
Helsinki romance does not depend on a big spend: the sea, the saunas and the long evenings in summer do most of the work. Here is how the options stack up, with prices in euros for each person unless stated.
Light spending: the harbour and the park
Two AB ferry tickets to Suomenlinna cost €6.60 in the HSL app or €7.00 contactless, valid for 80 minutes each. Build a picnic from the Old Market Hall, with smoked salmon, Karelian pastries and cloudberry jam, and carry it to the granite ramparts near the King’s Gate, where sails and passenger ships cross the channel. The crossing takes about 15 minutes, with boats every 40 to 60 minutes in winter (hsl.fi , suomenlinna.fi ).
Back on the mainland, stroll the linden-lined Esplanadi to the Havis Amanda fountain, then go up to Oodi’s top-floor terrace, free to enter, for a view over Parliament (oodihelsinki.fi ). Temppeliaukio Rock Church is about €8 each and hosts organ recitals and classical concerts.
Mid-range: steam and cold water
- Kotiharjun Sauna in Kallio: €16, wood-heated since 1928, Tuesday to Sunday afternoons, with separate men’s and women’s rooms (kotiharjunsauna.fi ).
- Allas Sea Pool beside Market Square: €19 on weekdays, €24 from Friday afternoon to Sunday, for two hours, with heated pools and saunas looking over the harbour (allaspool.fi ).
- Löyly at Hernesaarenranta 4: €29 for two hours, towel included, with a smoke sauna and a ladder into the sea. Book ahead (loylyhelsinki.fi ).
Löyly is the best sunset choice in summer. In winter, Kotiharjun gives a warmer, more neighbourly evening. The cold dip is a shock to the body, so step in slowly, keep your head above water and skip alcohol first.
Big night: dinner and a concert
Ravintola Kuurna at Meritullinkatu 6 in Kruununhaka is a candlelit bistro with seasonal set menus that change about every three weeks. Ravintola Sea Horse at Kapteeninkatu 11 in Ullanlinna is known for painted seahorse murals, crispy Baltic herring and reindeer fillet. Reserve at both.
The Helsinki Music Centre hosts the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Helsinki Philharmonic; the current programme is at musiikkitalo.fi . For a room with a water view, search Helsinki hotels on Booking.com .
Winter walking
Black ice can cover pavements from late autumn to early spring, so wear boots with deep tread and walk slowly arm in arm. Ice-hole swimming is best where staff supervise.
