Helsinki Stays: First Trip, Second Trip
Helsinki Stays: First Trip, Second Trip
What to do in Helsinki over several days depends on whether it is your first visit or a return. The first trip covers the centre; later trips go deeper and then further afield. Prices are in euros.
Arriving
Trains from Helsinki-Vantaa Airport to Central Station take 28 minutes on Train P or 33 minutes on Train I, alternating about every 10 minutes. The ABC single ticket is €4.50 in the HSL app or on a card and €4.80 contactless, valid for 90 minutes (hsl.fi ). If you buy a Helsinki Card, the cheapest Digital tier includes no transport, so choose the Region version if it must cover the airport.
First trip: two or three nights
Day one is the centre on foot. Senate Square, laid out by Carl Ludvig Engel between 1822 and 1852, holds the cathedral, the university and the Government Palace. Continue to Market Square and the 1889 Old Market Hall, then Oodi and Temppeliaukio Rock Church (about €8).
Day two starts with the HSL ferry to Suomenlinna (AB ticket, €3.30 or €3.50). Spend the afternoon at the Ateneum (€21 online, €23 at the door, closed Mondays), and end with a two-hour Löyly session at €29.
An optional third day goes to Porvoo by coach from Kamppi in 50 to 80 minutes. The three-day itinerary gives a schedule.
Second trip: depth
A return visit suits the guided Alvar Aalto tours (Studio €22, House €32, booked ahead at alvaraalto.fi ), a morning at Kiasma, and an afternoon at Kotiharjun Sauna in Kallio (€16, closed Mondays). Add a day at Nuuksio National Park by commuter train and bus, and a walk through Punavuori’s design streets. The four-day itinerary leaves room for these.
Third leg: beyond the capital
Tallinn pairs well with Helsinki: ferries take about 2 hours, with Tallink, Eckerö Line and Viking Line sailing. One or two nights in the Old Town, with Kadriorg Palace and the Kumu art museum, make a short twin-capital trip. Compare fares on tallink.com .
Tampere is reached by VR train. Rajaportti, from 1906, is Finland’s oldest public sauna still in use, and the Moomin Museum is open Tuesday to Friday 10:00 to 18:00 and weekends 09:00 to 17:00, closed Mondays (muumimuseo.fi , visittampere.fi ).
A night train runs from Helsinki to Rovaniemi in Lapland, with sleeper compartments priced per compartment. Departure times change, so read the timetable and fares on vr.fi .
Winter planning
To compare places to stay, search Helsinki hotels on Booking.com .
In late December daylight lasts under six hours, and pavements can hide black ice, so pack boots and plan outdoor sights around midday.
