Helsinki Bus Tours and DIY Tram Loops
Helsinki Bus Tours and DIY Tram Loops
Come to Helsinki in November and you will look in vain for an open-top sightseeing bus. The commentary loop is a warm-season service, and for the rest of the year the city’s own trams and buses do the job for a few euros. That makes the first question simple: what month is it? Prices below are in euros.
May to September: Stromma’s sightseeing bus
Stromma runs the city’s hop-on hop-off bus, starting from Senate Square, in the summer season, which in recent years has meant May to September. A day ticket has been about €36; check the current price and first and last departures before you build a day around it. The loop is worth it on a first visit if you want a commentary and a seat between sights such as Senate Square and Temppeliaukio’s rock church. To see what is running on your dates, search Helsinki hop-on hop-off tickets on GetYourGuide , and look at myhelsinki.fi for the city’s own visitor listings.
All year: build your own loop on the trams
Trams, and especially lines 2, 3 and 4, are how most visitors move between central sights, and one AB ticket is valid for 80 minutes with free changes between tram, bus and metro. Pay €3.30 through HSL’s app, or €3.50 by tapping a contactless card on board (hsl.fi ). A self-guided circuit that covers the classic stops:
- Central Station (Kaivokatu 1), to see Eliel Saarinen’s granite building and its four Lantern Men.
- Temppeliaukio Rock Church, Lutherinkatu 3 in Töölö, blasted into solid granite; adult entry is €8.
- Sibelius Monument in Sibelius Park, Eila Hiltunen’s 1967 sculpture of over 600 hollow steel pipes, free at any hour.
- Senate Square and its white cathedral, where adults pay roughly €8 to €10 to go inside.
- Market Square, finishing with a bowl of salmon soup in the 1889 market hall beside it.
The HSL app’s journey planner gives the tram or bus for each leg, and an 80-minute ticket comfortably covers two or three short hops if you keep moving.
City buses with a purpose
Two ordinary HSL routes earn a place on any visitor’s list. Bus 24 runs to Seurasaari, the island reached by a wooden footbridge; the forest park is free all year, while the 87 old wooden buildings of the open-air museum can be entered only in the mid-May to mid-September season. Buses 245 and 245A connect Espoo Centre station with Nuuksio National Park after a commuter train ride; since the outer stops could need more than an ABC fare, let the planner choose your ticket.
Coaches out of the city
For a bus “tour” that leaves town, coaches run from Kamppi bus terminal to Porvoo, the riverside town of red-ochre storehouses chartered in 1346. OnniBus and Matkahuolto between them depart about every 20 minutes, and the ride lasts somewhere between 50 and 80 minutes, according to how many stops the coach makes. Fares vary with the operator and the time you book, so price them on onnibus.com or at the terminal. If you would rather not plan the day, compare Porvoo day tours on Viator .
The airport is a train, not a bus
From Helsinki-Vantaa the quickest link is the Ring Rail Line, whose underground station lies between the two terminals. Train P reaches Central Station in 28 minutes, train I in 33, and between them a train leaves every 10 minutes. The fare is the ABC zone single, valid 90 minutes: €4.50 through the app, €4.80 by contactless.
Cards and passes
The Helsinki Card comes in three tiers, at 2026 prices: Digital (€51 for 24 hours) covers entries but leaves every tram, bus and ferry to you; City (€62 for 24 hours) adds zones AB, which covers the trams and the Suomenlinna ferry; Region (€64 for 24 hours) adds zone C and so the airport train. For most people on foot, app singles cost less than any card; the card pays off only on a heavy museum day of three paid entries or more.
Verdict: outside summer, skip the search for a tour bus and ride the trams on an AB ticket; in summer, the Stromma bus earns its price only on a first, short visit.

Tip: download the HSL app and buy your first ticket before you leave the airport, since it is 30 cents cheaper than tapping a card for the ABC fare.
