Five Real Day Trips from Dubai

Travel advisory: Dubai and the wider UAE were caught up in the 2026 regional conflict with Iran. During a roughly six-week phase in early 2026, Iranian drones and missiles struck sites in the UAE, including near Dubai’s airport and port and a hotel on Palm Jumeirah. A ceasefire has held since April, and Dubai’s flights, hotels, and attractions are operating and recovering, though the situation stays fluid (the current risk is mainly to shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, not the city). The US State Department has the UAE at “Reconsider Travel” and the UK FCDO does not advise against travel, but both flag the regional situation. Check the current US State Department and UK FCDO advisories before booking, and again before you fly. Everything below is written for a normal visit, for when it’s calm.
Dubai is not the UAE’s capital, that’s Abu Dhabi, roughly 90 minutes southwest, and the five real day trips out of Dubai each go somewhere genuinely different rather than repeating the same desert-and-mosque formula.
Abu Dhabi: the capital, and the Grand Mosque
About 140km and 1.5 hours door to door, though traffic can stretch that toward 2 hours. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is free to enter, open Saturday-Thursday 9am-9pm and Friday 9am-noon and 3pm-9pm, with free abayas and headscarves loaned at the door for the strict dress code; free daily guided tours run with an official cultural specialist, and the mosque’s own visitor FAQ covers dress code and registration, recommended and sometimes required in peak season. Round out the day with Louvre Abu Dhabi, Qasr Al Watan, or Yas Island’s Ferrari World if the mosque alone doesn’t fill it.
Sharjah: the UNESCO cultural capital, 25-40 minutes away
Sharjah sits only about 25km from Dubai, a 25-40 minute drive or a roughly 44-minute RTA bus ride to Al Ghubaiba Station (AED 3-11). The Museum of Islamic Civilization, the heritage and arts district, the Blue Souk, and Al Noor Mosque fill a full 6-8 hour day without rushing.
Hatta: Dubai’s own mountain exclave
Roughly 130km and 1.5 hours via the E44, Hatta sits inside the Hajar Mountains, technically still part of Dubai. Hatta Dam’s turquoise reservoir supports kayaking and boat rides, the Hatta Heritage Village covers traditional Emirati life, and the Hatta Wadi Hub adventure park runs mountain biking, ziplining, and archery roughly 9am-7pm weekdays and 9am-9pm weekends. Al Ain: the Garden City, Abu Dhabi’s second city
About 140-170km, roughly 2 hours via the E66. Al Ain Oasis is a UNESCO-listed, free walk-through date-palm oasis; Jebel Hafeet is an 11.7km, 60-curve mountain drive to the UAE’s second-highest peak at 1,240m; Al Jahili Fort and Al Ain Zoo round out the day. Guided tours bundling the summit drive, oasis, and forts run AED 150-200 per person shared or AED 900-1,300 for a private vehicle, typically a 9-10 hour day. Fujairah and the East Coast: the Gulf of Oman side
Roughly 180-200km, 1.5-2 hours. Snoopy Island at Al Aqah, named for its Snoopy-shaped rock, is best for snorkeling and diving October through April; Fujairah Fort and Al-Bidyah Mosque, the UAE’s oldest at roughly 1446, round out the coast.
Verdict: pair the Grand Mosque with an overnight rather than compressing Abu Dhabi into a rushed half-day, and treat Hatta as the pick if mountains and water beat a museum for your group.
