Serbia Day Trips Sorted by Travel Time

A practical way to sort Serbian day trips from Belgrade is by how long you spend in transit, because that decides whether you get a day out or a day in a car. Fares and fees are in dinars (RSD), about 117 to the euro. Crowds at political rallies can turn violent with little warning, so leave any you pass and check local news before you set out.

Under an hour each way

Novi Sad. The Soko high-speed train leaves Belgrade Centar (Prokop) and is advertised at 34 minutes to Petrovaradin and about 36 to Novi Sad. Timetables have been revised several times, so allow up to an hour and confirm on srbijavoz.rs . Since 15 July 2026 a one-way ticket to Petrovaradin is 549 RSD in Regio and 679 RSD in InterCity with a reserved seat. A return with a named train and date earns 20% off. A 500 RSD charge hits anyone who boards at a staffed station with no ticket, or who rides a different train from the one on a return ticket.

Petrovaradin Fortress is an 18th century Habsburg citadel above the Danube with the City Museum and military galleries; the grounds are open. EXIT ran here from 2000 to 2025 and has left, so nothing about the festival should shape your plan. Smederevo. The fortress is roughly 45 km down the Danube, reachable by road in about 50 minutes. It dates from 1428 to 1430 and has 25 towers around a triangular courtyard. It is on Serbia’s Tentative List for World Heritage. The entry price was not confirmed, so ask on arrival.

Around an hour and a half

Subotica. Since 8 October 2025 the Soko reaches Subotica in 79 minutes (the slower Interregio takes 99). The draw is Secession architecture: the City Hall and the synagogue, which reopened in March 2018 after full restoration. The tourist board promotes a free architecture walk, and visitsubotica.rs shows the days. Palić and its zoo lie nearby, but hours and prices were not confirmed.

Topola and Oplenac. Topola lies in the Šumadija wine hills, and Oplenac above it is the Karađorđević royal mausoleum, with the Church of St George and its mosaics. Treat it as a quiet historical visit. In Topola town itself, Karađorđe’s Konak tells the earlier part of that story. One report puts the bus from Belgrade at about 1.5 hours, and no ticket price was confirmed; see topolaoplenac.org.rs .

A very long day

The Iron Gate is a stretch. Lepenski Vir is 163 km and 2 hours 15 minutes from Belgrade by car, with Golubac on the way. Sleeping at Donji Milanovac is wiser. Golubac is closed on Mondays and open 10:00 to 16:00 in October, with Green Zone tickets at 950 RSD. Lepenski Vir costs 600 RSD, opens 09:00 to 18:00 in October and shuts for all of February. Better as overnight trips

Mokra Gora and the Šargan Eight are 3.5 to 4 hours each way. Uvac, Tara and Studenica need a night out too, and Đavolja Varoš lies 288 km from Belgrade, near Kuršumlija in the south. Plan all of these as stays rather than outings.
