Travelling to San Juan With Children
Most San Juan family plans come down to age limits, weight limits and ticket cutoffs, so this page is organised around those. Prices are in US dollars, with Puerto Rico’s 11.5% sales tax added to many of them. Midday heat is strong, and hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November.
The water rule that applies to every age
Condado and Ocean Park have dangerous rip currents, and tourists were pulled out to sea at Condado in March and April 2026. Lifeguards cover only part of that sand. Children should paddle only at a beach with a lifeguard on duty and a flag that is not red, with an adult within arm’s reach. Balneario de Escambrón is the public beach with lifeguards, restrooms and parking, according to travel writers, but it has closed after poor water tests, so check before loading the car.
Free under 16
San Juan National Historic Site charges $10 to visitors 16 and over, and children 15 and under go in free. One ticket covers El Morro and San Cristóbal for 24 hours, cards only, between 9am and 5pm. San Cristóbal is the better one for children, with long walls, cannons and tunnels. The walk between the two takes 15 to 20 minutes along the wall, and the sun is fierce on the stone, so carry water.
The big lawn at El Morro has been fenced off for turf replacement since April 2026. Local families have traditionally flown kites there, so look at the park’s visit page before packing one.
El Portal Rainforest Center in El Yunque follows the same cutoff, with free entry for ages 15 and under and $8 for everyone older. A wheelchair can use one of its two nature trails. The road corridor around it costs nothing, and the drive from San Juan is about an hour. Rivers rise fast after rain, and a brown or climbing river is the cue to leave it.
Ages 6 and up
The Laguna Grande evening kayak tour accepts children from 6. Under the operator’s rules, ages 6 to 13 share a kayak with an adult, teenagers aged 14 to 17 need an adult on the tour, and each person must weigh no more than 240 lb. Nobody may swim in the bay. Kayaking Puerto Rico posts the full terms.
Museo de las Américas, on the second floor of the Cuartel de Ballajá, asks $5 for children and $8 for adults. It is open Tuesday to Friday (9am to noon, 1pm to 4pm) and at weekends from 11am to 4pm.
Tall enough for the zip line
Toro Verde in Orocovis, 1 to 1.5 hours southwest, requires riders on The Monster to stand at least 4 feet tall and weigh between 100 and 270 lb. Closed-toe shoes are compulsory. The ride costs $114.99 per person, and family packages exist, so ask when you reserve.
Adults only
Casa Bacardí’s tours are limited to guests 18 and over. Under-18s may use only the pavilion, store and food area when with an adult, so it is not a family booking.
