Multi-Day Trips: Staying Longer in Addis
Important: this page recommends no overnight trips. Ethiopia is at war. Fighting between federal forces and Tigray-aligned groups resumed on 23 September 2026, Ethiopian Airlines has halted flights to Tigray, and the UK Foreign Office (FCDO) has reported attacks, possibly by drones, on military sites in Addis Ababa. The FCDO advises against all travel to Tigray, Amhara and Gambela and to parts of Oromia, Afar and other regions. For the capital it describes a high terrorism threat and crime hotspots at Meskel Square, Bole and Entoto. The US State Department gives Ethiopia Level 3, Reconsider Travel, in guidance that predates the September fighting. Check gov.uk and travel.state.gov before any booking and again before departure.
Travellers often look for a week-long loop out of Addis Ababa. In October 2026 none can be recommended, and this page says why before suggesting how to use a longer stay in the capital.
Where the advice stands, region by region
The routes that normally fill a multi-day list are Lalibela, Gondar, Bahir Dar and Lake Tana, the Blue Nile Falls, the Simien Mountains, Axum, the Danakil Depression and Debre Libanos. Travel to all of them is advised against at present, so they are not described, priced or linked here.

Foreigners are reportedly unable to use Afar’s airports. Lalibela lies on the Amhara front line named in reports from September 2026.
Flying does not change the picture
A plane ticket alters how you arrive, and the advice on the ground stays the same. Ethiopian Airlines stopped flying to Mekelle, Axum and Shire from 23 September 2026, and the FCDO says northern flights may be suspended or cancelled at short notice. Someone who flew in could end up stranded in a region where the advice is to stay away.
The south
Visitors sometimes suggest the southern Rift Valley or the Bale area instead. Current conditions there are not established, so this page does not recommend or describe them. Parts of Oromia and the Guji zones are on the FCDO lists, so read the regional page closely before considering any road beyond Addis.
A five-day plan inside Addis and Bishoftu
Five days in the capital can be full without a single overnight away.
- Day 1: a slow arrival day, since the city is at about 2,355 metres. Take a coffee ceremony and an early night.
- Day 2: the National Museum and the Ethnological Museum, reached by car.
- Day 3: Unity Park, closed on Mondays, then Ethio-jazz in the evening, door to door by car.
- Day 4: Entoto by car and in daylight, since the FCDO lists it as a crime hotspot.
- Day 5: the Bishoftu crater lakes, 48 to 62 kilometres away on the Addis-Adama Expressway that the FCDO exempts from its East Shewa warning. The exemption is no guarantee of calm, and you should not continue towards Adama or Awash.

Planning notes
- The Great Ethiopian Run is listed for 22 November 2026 and Timkat for 19 January 2027, though dates may change. The FCDO notes large crowds and a heightened threat at festivals.
- Apply for an e-visa only through the official portal, www.evisa.gov.et . Fees vary between guides, so read the figure there.
- Check your insurer will cover Ethiopia, and keep every booking changeable.
- Fuel is short nationwide, so ask your hotel or driver about supply before any long drive.
- One dollar buys about 160 to 165 birr in October 2026.
