Old San Juan on Foot

Old San Juan is small enough to walk end to end without a guide, and what you pay for depends mostly on whether you want to go inside things. Heat and slick cobblestones are the main hazards, so bring water, sun protection and shoes with grip. The Atlantic hurricane season lasts from 1 June until 30 November.

Free on your own

Paseo de la Princesa. About 300 metres of promenade follow the south wall to the Raíces Fountain beside the Puerta de San Juan. It is open at any hour, and weekend craft stalls are reported.

Calle del Cristo and the squares. From the gate, climb to the Catedral de San Juan Bautista at numbers 151 to 153. It is an active church, so cover your shoulders and knees. Plaza de Armas and Plaza Colón are public squares that tie the streets together.

The walls. The sandstone walls and the paths along them cost nothing. El Morro and San Cristóbal are just under a mile apart, and the wall walk between them takes 15 to 20 minutes.

The $10 ticket applies to entering the two forts, not to walking past them. It covers visitors aged 16 and over for 24 hours at both, children 15 and under are free, and the ticket office accepts cards only. The forts keep daytime hours from 9am to 5pm. The lawn at El Morro has been under turf repair since April 2026, and in mid-January the San Sebastián Street Festival closes El Morro and the north walls from 7pm to 5am. Guided walks

Flavors Food Tours at 206 Calle Tetuán offers a 2-hour history walk, a food tour of up to five stops, a Rum Runners cocktail tour and a guided El Morro tour that starts outside El Convento Hotel. Prices are listed only on its booking page, so start from the operator’s site .

Over in Santurce, The Art Walk Puerto Rico guides a 90-minute stroll past the Calle Cerra murals. No 2026 date has been found for the mural festival there, so book the walk rather than counting on an event.

Getting to the start

By car, use the underground parking at the end of Calle Norzagaray, in Fifth Centennial Plaza, and allow a 5 to 10 minute walk. Cars cannot enter the El Morro grounds. The Tren Urbano stops at Sagrado Corazón, not in the old town, so a bus or taxi completes the trip. Free trolleys are reported as not running, so do not build a plan around them.

Walk the beach, skip the surf

Condado and Ocean Park have rip currents strong enough to pull swimmers out, and tourists were swept out at Condado in March and April 2026. Stay on the sand unless a lifeguard is on duty and the flag is not red.
