Overnight Trips from San Juan

This page lays out four trips that you assemble yourself from a base in the capital, including two island overnights that need a ferry or a flight. It does not name hotels or guesthouses, so choose a room by neighbourhood on a booking site and match it to the trip you want. Prices are in US dollars, often plus Puerto Rico’s 11.5% sales tax. Atlantic storms are most likely between 1 June and 30 November.

A San Juan base for three days
Spend the first day in Old San Juan, where one $10 ticket opens El Morro and San Cristóbal for 24 hours (ages 16 and over, cards only, 9am to 5pm). The second day goes east: El Yunque in the morning and the Laguna Grande kayak tour in the evening. The third can be a museum, Casa Bacardí for adults, or a beach with lifeguards such as Balneario de Escambrón. Culebra
All ferries to Culebra leave from the Ceiba terminal, 75 to 90 minutes by road from San Juan, and not from Fajardo. Adults pay $2.25 each way at present, with children and older passengers on lower tiers. A new, higher fare for non-residents has been delayed until 31 December 2026, so confirm the price on the Puerto Rico Ferry rates page before you travel.
Practical points that shape the whole trip:
- The first sailing leaves at 3:30am, and the crossing takes about 1 to 1.5 hours.
- Weekend boats sell out, and tickets are released one to two months ahead.
- Arrive an hour early, because boarding closes 10 minutes before departure.
- Visitors cannot bring a car, so rent a golf cart or jeep on the island.
- Cape Air flies from San Juan in roughly 35 to 40 minutes if the ferry schedule does not suit you.
Flamenco Beach is the draw. A small gate fee is reported, so carry cash.
Vieques
The same terminal serves Vieques at $2.00 for adults each way. Mosquito Bay is the reason most visitors stay, and tours there are run only after dark, so a night on the island is required. Motorboats and jet skis are banned, swimming is not allowed, and the sky is darkest around the new moon, with 9 November and 8 December due in 2026. The mountain loop
Toro Verde in Orocovis is 1 to 1.5 hours southwest, and The Monster costs $114.99. Guavate near Cayey is a roast-pork stretch of PR-184 that is busy at weekends.
