San Juan Landmarks and Museums
Sightseeing in San Juan comes down to opening hours and entry rules, so the table below comes first and the notes follow. Costs are in US dollars. Start early, because the stone streets hold heat, and note that hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November.

The fortifications
The National Park Service dates El Morro to 1539 and San Cristóbal to 1634, with rebuilding that continued through the 1780s. The city wall was finished in 1678, and its sandstone stands tall along the old town’s edge. San Cristóbal spreads over 27 acres and is described by the park as the largest fortification Spain built in the New World. It also has troop tunnels and countermine tunnels that visitors can walk through. On the coast east of El Morro stands the Garita del Diablo, or Devil’s Sentry Box, a small lookout post.
The forts close on Thanksgiving, 25 December and 1 January. During the San Sebastián Street Festival in mid-January, El Morro and the north walls close to visitors from 7pm to 5am each night, though daytime hours continue. The lawn in front of El Morro has been closed for turf replacement since April 2026, so the park’s visit page is the place to check what is open. Cars cannot enter the El Morro grounds.
Church, governor’s home and promenade
The cathedral at 151 to 153 Calle del Cristo contains a marble tomb reported to hold Juan Ponce de León, and the preserved remains of San Pío in a glass case. It is an active church, with Sunday masses reported at 9am and 11am, so cover your shoulders and knees.
La Fortaleza has been the governor’s residence since 1533. Visitors report free guided tours of about half an hour, but the schedule shifts daily, so call before you walk up.
The Paseo de la Princesa covers about 300 metres beside the south wall and ends at the Raíces Fountain by the Puerta de San Juan.
Museums and murals
Museo de las Américas fills the second floor of the Cuartel de Ballajá, with hours on its visit page . Casa Blanca, a museum in Old San Juan, is reported open Wednesday to Sunday, but hours and price differ by source, so confirm them first.
In Santurce, Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico at 299 Avenida de Diego lists its free Thursday evening on its visit page , and adult admission is reported at about $17. Calle Cerra nearby is known for murals, and The Art Walk Puerto Rico leads a guided walk of about 90 minutes.
