Kendwa Walks and Tide Timing

Safety notice, October 2026: Tanzania is rated Level 3, Reconsider Travel, by the US State Department; see travel.state.gov . The UK does not advise against Zanzibar. Its safety page cautions against walking alone along remote or lonely stretches, advises keeping drinks in sight and notes that crimes have happened at the island’s beaches. Kendwa Walks and Tide Timing

Walking near Kendwa means four short routes, not a programme of guided tours. Each one depends on the tide, the daylight or both, so the order below follows how much planning they need.

Walk one: along the shore at Kendwa

Stroll the bay itself. The sand is public and free, and the swimming works at every tide, which makes it the simplest outing. Hotels along the strip rent loungers to guests and to people eating or drinking, so you can stop for a drink halfway.

Walk two: the village

A guided walk in Kendwa village shows daily life behind the resort strip. Wear clothes that cover shoulders and knees, and ask your hotel to arrange the guide. Stay on busy tracks, because Wikivoyage warns about lonely stretches. Find a guided walk

Walk three: south along the sand

South of the resorts, quieter beaches have little development. Walk there in daylight only, with company, and tell your hotel the route and the time you expect to return.

Walk four: Kendwa to Nungwi

This is the one route with a deadline.

  1. Distance and time: about 3 km, about 30 minutes each way.
  2. Tide: low tide only. At high tide the rocky sections cannot be crossed.
  3. Backup: the back road links the two villages when the shore is closed.
  4. Return: check the tide table with the hotel before leaving, since a falling tide on the way out means a rising one on the way back. A boat from Nungwi has been priced from about TSh 20,000, going by older figures.
  5. Footwear: sturdy sandals suit the rocky sections.

At the Nungwi end you can look at the dhow yard and, at dawn, the fish market recommended on Wikivoyage . Nungwi’s own village beach is more tidal than Kendwa’s, so at low tide the water is a long wade away.

What is not a Kendwa walk

Stone Town is excellent on foot, but it lies about 60 km away, and the drive takes 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes each way. Treat it as a day trip, and see the day trips page .

Arriving on foot from the main road

The 116 daladala from Darajani in Stone Town stops at the Kendwa junction. From there it is a downhill walk of about 1.5 km, which one guide puts at 15 minutes.

Insurance and manners

Zanzibar insurance is required of all visitors and costs US$44 per adult for up to 92 days, from visitzanzibar.go.tz . Vendors will offer trips and curios as you walk, and a polite refusal is enough. Book any boat trip through a hotel desk.
