Tanzania Romantic Getaways: Slow or Active
Travel advisory: Plan the romance after the paperwork. The US advises reconsidering travel to Tanzania, and the UK advises against all but essential travel within 20 km of the Mozambique frontier at Cabo Delgado, far from the lodges and beaches below. Read the latest on travel.state.gov and the UK foreign travel advice .
Some couples want a hammock and a book, and others want a reef at dawn. Tanzania suits both, so choose your pace first and book the hotels afterwards.
The slow version: sandbars and sunsets
The east and north coasts of Zanzibar do slow better than most places. Paje and Jambiani, on the south-east shore, have shallow lagoons and sandbars that surface at low tide, so tide tables decide your day. Nungwi and Kendwa in the north keep swimmable water at most tides, and sunsets there are the reward. A sunset dhow cruise is the classic evening, and The Rock restaurant, set on a coral outcrop in the sea, is reported at USD 70 to 140 for two. Compare beachfront rooms through Booking.com , and check tides before you commit to a table.
The active version: reef, wind and a volcano
Boat trips from Nungwi and Kendwa head to the Mnemba reef for snorkelling and, with luck, dolphins. A marine fee of about USD 20 each is reported on top of the boat price. Mnemba island itself is reserved for guests of its lodge. Paje’s steady winds draw kitesurfers, and learning together is a good shared challenge. For mountain views, Mount Meru’s four-day trek stays inside Arusha National Park with an armed ranger, and climbing Kilimanjaro requires a registered operator and guide, taking 7 or more days.
The splurge: a balloon and a private camp
A shared sunrise balloon flight over the Serengeti was listed at USD 599 per person in 2026. It lasts about an hour and ends with a champagne breakfast in the bush. Park fees are separate, at USD 82.60 per adult per 24 hours in peak season. Flights from the central Serengeti run all year, and the balloon operator lists other areas by season. Fly-in tented camps are often priced from around USD 1,000 per night, and flights are available with Coastal Aviation . The Serengeti is 8 to 9 hours by road from Arusha, so the flight saves a day.
Etiquette and discretion
Zanzibar is a conservative Muslim society. Cover shoulders and knees in Stone Town and villages, and keep beachwear for the beach and resort. Public displays of affection can cause offence, and the UK government warns that same-sex couples can be arrested for kissing or holding hands in public, so be discreet.
Planning notes
- Entry needs an e-visa through the immigration portal .
- Mandatory inbound insurance began on 1 October 2026, reported at about USD 44, and one policy covers the mainland and Zanzibar.
- Parks take cards or e-payment only, and operators usually prepay.
- Malaria is present below about 1,800 m, including most coast and safari areas.
- Plastic carrier bags are banned, so pack cloth bags for the beach.
The page on multi-day trips shows how long each leg takes, and the four-day itinerary fits a short honeymoon.
Verdict: four nights on the bush and four on the beach is the right balance, with the balloon on your first morning.
