Day 1: Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and the Cistern
Book the Hagia Sophia gallery slot for opening, EUR 25 and the only visitable section since the building’s 2020 return to active mosque use, with closures around each of the 5 daily prayers. The Blue Mosque across the Hippodrome is free. Spend the afternoon at the Basilica Cistern , 1,950 TRY for the day ticket, and stay in Sultanahmet for dinner.
Day 2: Topkapi Palace and the Grand Bazaar
Topkapi is closed Tuesdays, confirm on muze.gov.tr ; the combined palace and Harem ticket, 2,750 TRY, includes Hagia Irene and deserves a genuine half day for the Treasury alone. Walk to the Grand Bazaar after, closed Sundays, 08:30 to 19:00 otherwise, with the Spice Bazaar as your daily fallback. Haggle from roughly 40 to 50 percent of the opening ask.
Day 3: Kadikoy and the Bosphorus
Cross to Kadikoy on a Sehir Hatlari ferry, 15 to 20 minutes for an Istanbulkart fare, and eat lunch at the fish market rather than a Sultanahmet tourist menu. Come back for the evening’s Bosphorus cruise, or repeat the public ferry to Uskudar for a free sunset crossing instead.
Day 4: Suleymaniye, Balat and a hammam
Start at Suleymaniye Mosque, Mimar Sinan’s 1557 masterpiece sitting above the Grand Bazaar, free entry and dramatically quieter than the Blue Mosque despite comparable grandeur. Spend the afternoon in Balat and Fener along the Golden Horn, the former Jewish and Greek quarters known now for pastel wooden houses on streets like Kiremit Caddesi and the Bulgarian Iron Church. End the day at a historic hammam, Cagaloglu or Suleymaniye Hamami among the names worth booking ahead, roughly EUR 30 for a basic sauna-and-scrub session or EUR 68-88 for the full kese-and-massage package.
