Romantic Weekend Plan for Addis Ababa

Couples, check the advisories first. An armed conflict is under way in Ethiopia. Fighting between federal forces and Tigray-aligned groups resumed on 23 September 2026 and flights to Tigray have been suspended. The UK Foreign Office (FCDO) has noted reports of attacks, possibly by drone, on military sites in Addis Ababa and warns of a high terrorism threat that can reach hotels, restaurants, bars and tourist sites. It advises against all travel to Tigray, Amhara and Gambela and to parts of Oromia, Afar and other regions, but not to the capital itself. The US State Department lists Ethiopia at Level 3, Reconsider Travel, in an advisory that predates the September fighting. Read gov.uk and travel.state.gov before you book and again before you fly, and choose bookings you can cancel.

Addis Ababa is a working capital and the list of romantic things to do is short. Two spa resorts, an evening of live Ethio-jazz and the slow ritual of coffee make up a weekend that suits two people who want quiet more than spectacle. The plan below runs from Friday evening to Sunday.

Friday evening: Ethio-jazz

Fendika, known for azmari singers and Ethio-jazz, plays as Fendika@Hyatt at the Hyatt Regency on Meskel Square, its former Kazanchis compound having been demolished in October 2024. Nothing is published about programme or price, so check Fendika’s website or its social media for the night you want. The African Jazz Village at the Ghion Hotel is another option, with Ethio-jazz concerts reported on Thursday nights. Meskel Square is one of the places the FCDO names for robberies, so arrive and leave by car, leave your passports in the hotel safe and keep phones out of sight.

Saturday morning: coffee for two

A coffee ceremony runs through three rounds, called abol, tona and baraka, and takes long enough to make a calm start to the day. Many hotels and cafes will host one. Galani Coffee has branches in Jackross, Lebu and Churchill and another on Entoto, and each branch posts its hours on its website . They differ, so look before you go.

Saturday afternoon and night: a lakeside spa stay

Kuriftu Resort & Spa sits beside a Bishoftu crater lake, 48 to 62 kilometres from the capital, about 1 to 1.5 hours away by road. Rooms are listed at about USD 115 a night on booking sites, so check the live rate. Besides the spa there is a water park that was reported to open in 2020. The route follows the Addis-Adama Expressway, which the FCDO excludes from its all-but-essential warning for East Shewa. Sunday: the forest above the city

Kuriftu Entoto Resort & Spa is a forest lodge with a spa and a view across the city. It can stand in for the lake stay if you would rather stay close to town. The FCDO names Entoto as a crime hotspot, so book a driver for the entire trip, arrive before dusk and stay away from the quiet walking paths. The altitude is 2,600 to 3,100 metres, so couples from low ground should expect shortness of breath and drink plenty of water.

A drive up to the heights at sunset is the simplest outing of all. Keep the driver waiting, stay by the car and be back in the city soon after dark.

Money and bookings
