2 Days in Sapporo: The First-Timer Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival And The Odori/Susukino Core
- Land at New Chitose Airport (CTS) and take the JR Rapid Airport train straight to Sapporo Station, a genuine 37 minutes for 1,430 yen unreserved. This is the correct move for nearly everyone, the shinkansen doesn’t reach Sapporo yet and won’t until roughly FY2038
- Check in around Sapporo Station or Odori, both put you inside the airport-train and subway network without a commute
- Walk Odori Park, free and open, a 1.5km green spine through downtown, then the Sapporo TV Tower at its eastern end (observation deck 800 yen adult) and the small, famously more-modest-than-photos Clock Tower
- Grab a SAPICA IC card at any subway station before you need it, Sapporo’s subway is Japan’s only rubber-tired system, built for grip on snow
- Head into Susukino for dinner and Ramen Yokocho, a dense alley of ramen counters. Order the miso ramen Sapporo actually invented, at Aji no Sanpei or any specialist shop, 900-1,300 yen a bowl
Is 48 hours actually enough for Sapporo? Enough for the core and one big evening, not enough for a day trip on top. Cutting Otaru, Niseko, or Jozankei from a 2-day plan isn’t a compromise, it’s the honest math of Sapporo’s real distances, and trying to wedge one in usually costs you Mt Moiwa’s sunset window instead.
Day 2: Beer Museum, Nijo Market, And Mt Moiwa At Night
- Late morning at Nijo Market for an on-the-spot kaisendon (seafood rice bowl), fresh uni, crab, and salmon roe run 2,000-4,000+ yen depending on toppings
- Early afternoon at the Sapporo Beer Museum, Japan’s only one. It introduced its first-ever general admission on 1 July 2026, 1,000 yen adult, tastings also 1,000 yen, so don’t expect a free walk-through anymore
- Late afternoon, head to the Mt Moiwa Ropeway and arrive 1-2 hours before sunset. Combo round trip runs 2,100 yen, ropeway alone 1,400 yen, and the daylight-to-night transition over the Ishikari Plain is genuinely one of Japan’s “New Three Major Night Views,” not marketing copy
- A free shuttle bus runs every 15 minutes from the Ropeway Iriguchi streetcar stop if you don’t want to walk up
Do I need to book the Mt Moiwa Ropeway ahead? No, it’s walk-up ticketing at the base station. The only booking pressure on this trip is your hotel if any part of it touches early February’s Snow Festival week, when Odori-area rooms sell out months out and rates can double.
Skip the temptation to add a third stop to Day 2 just because Mt Moiwa’s ropeway line moved fast. The whole reason this 2-day plan works is that it protects that sunset window instead of racing to it exhausted, and that’s the one habit worth keeping even when you upgrade to a longer trip next time.
