4 Days in Sapporo: The First-Timer Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival And The Odori/Susukino Core
- Land at New Chitose Airport (CTS) and ride the JR Rapid Airport train into Sapporo Station, 37 minutes for 1,430 yen unreserved. The shinkansen doesn’t reach Sapporo yet, don’t plan around one
- Check in around Sapporo Station or Odori, both sit on the airport-train line and all three subway connections
- Walk Odori Park (free), the Sapporo TV Tower (800 yen adult observation deck), and the Clock Tower
- Grab a SAPICA IC card, Sapporo’s subway is Japan’s only rubber-tired system, built for grip in the snow
- Dinner in Susukino at Ramen Yokocho, try the miso ramen invented here at Aji no Sanpei in 1958, 900-1,300 yen a bowl
Day 2: Beer Museum, Nijo Market, And Mt Moiwa At Night
- Morning at the Sapporo Beer Museum, Japan’s only one, now charging 1,000 yen general admission as of 1 July 2026, plus 1,000 yen tastings
- Lunch at Nijo Market, a kaisendon runs 2,000-4,000+ yen depending on toppings
- Late afternoon, Mt Moiwa Ropeway, arrive 1-2 hours before sunset, combo round trip 2,100 yen, ropeway alone 1,400 yen, one of Japan’s “New Three Major Night Views”
- Free shuttle bus every 15 minutes from the Ropeway Iriguchi streetcar stop
Day 3: Otaru Day Trip
- JR Hakodate Main Line from Sapporo Station, 30-40 minutes, 800 yen one way
- Walk the Otaru Canal and its brick-warehouse district, about 10 minutes from Otaru Station
- Browse glassware and music-box shops, then a sit-down sushi lunch, Otaru’s sushi scene rivals Sapporo’s
- Head back with time to spare, don’t cut the return connection close in winter
Day 4: Maruyama, Red Brick, And Shiroi Koibito Park
- Morning at Maruyama, a park, Hokkaido Jingu shrine, and small zoo cluster, a genuine slow-down after three fast days
- Ride the subway back toward Odori for the Former Hokkaido Government Office building, the Red Brick, which reopened 25 July 2025 after a multi-year renovation with a new octagonal observation balcony, now 300 yen admission
- Afternoon at Shiroi Koibito Park, the chocolate-factory theme park built around Hokkaido’s famous cookie souvenir, 800 yen adult, with hourly mechanical clock-tower shows 10am-5pm
- A last dinner in Susukino or Sapporo Station’s underground concourse, both work well on a travel-adjacent last night
Is a fourth day worth adding, or should I just extend Otaru? Worth adding, honestly. Otaru itself doesn’t need a second half-day, but Maruyama, the Red Brick, and Shiroi Koibito give you a genuinely different, slower kind of Sapporo day that the first three don’t cover.
Do the Beer Museum and Red Brick still count as free attractions? No, and any source telling you otherwise is describing a pre-2025 Sapporo. The Beer Museum introduced 1,000 yen general admission on 1 July 2026, and the Red Brick building reopened at 300 yen in July 2025. Budget for both.
Four days is the sweet spot for a first Sapporo trip without a car-dependent day trip attached, build the fifth day around Niseko or Jozankei only once you’ve confirmed you actually want a longer stay next time.
