2 Days in Phuket: First-Timer Plan

Two days is enough for Phuket’s essentials if you pick one beach base and don’t try to circle the island. This plan assumes Kata, a good all-round first-timer beach, but the same shape works from Patong or Karon.

Day 1: Arrive and settle into the beach

Phuket International Airport (HKT) sits at the north end of the island, about 40 to 60 minutes from the southern beaches. Use Grab or Bolt, not Uber, there is no Uber in Thailand, and only Grab can legally pick up inside the terminal. Check in, then spend the afternoon on the beach. West-coast beaches carry a real monsoon-season warning, May through October: a red flag means no swimming, rip currents drown people here most years. In the evening, walk the beachfront or, if you’re based in or near Patong, take a look at Bangla Road for the nightlife without committing to it.

Day 2: Old Town, Big Buddha, Wat Chalong, sunset

Spend the morning in Phuket Old Town, Thalang Road and Soi Romanee for the Sino-Portuguese shophouses, plus a coffee at a local cafe. Head to the Big Buddha next, the 45m marble statue on Nakkerd Hill is free with donations welcome and an enforced dress code, though a 2024 landslide closed its access road on and off into early 2026, so confirm current access before you go. Wat Chalong, the island’s largest and most revered temple, is a short drive from there. End the day at Promthep Cape for sunset, the island’s classic viewpoint, then head back for dinner.

Budget and practicalities

A mid-range daily budget runs roughly THB 2,500 to 4,500 per person, Phuket is pricier than mainland Thailand. Every foreign arrival needs a free Thailand Digital Arrival Card filed online within 72 hours of arrival, don’t skip it and don’t pay a third-party site for it.
