Phuket Activities Worth Planning Around
Phuket has two moods. From about November to April the sea is calm and boat days work. From about May to October the southwest monsoon brings rain, heavy surf and cancelled crossings. Most of the activities below suit one or both, so pick by the weather on the day rather than by a fixed itinerary.
When the weather turns
Rain does not cancel everything. These options work under a roof or a forest canopy, in any month.
- Phuket Elephant Sanctuary, Paklok. This is an observation-only place: guests watch rescued elephants from walkways and trails. There is no riding or bathing, and feeding by visitors ended on 1 April 2026. The Canopy Walkway Tour is from 1,900 THB and takes about 90 minutes, while the Half Day Program is from 3,000 THB for ages 13 and up. Places are reserved ahead, there are no drop-ins, and the sanctuary’s own site is phuketelephantsanctuary.org .
- Soi Dog Foundation, Mai Khao. The shelter is home to more than 1,800 dogs and cats. Free walking tours start at 10:30 and 13:30 from Monday to Friday, with nothing to book. Weekends are closed. See the visit page .
- Chalong Bay Rum. A cocktail workshop starts at 12:00, 14:00 or 16:00 each day and needs a booking. The operator does not publish a price, so ask when you reserve through chalongbayrum.com .
- Muay Thai training. Tiger Muay Thai and Sinbi Muay Thai are active camps around Chalong and Rawai. Timetables and drop-in rates are not confirmed here, so message a camp first.
When the sea is calm
Racha Noi and Racha Yai are the main dive sites for day trips from Chalong. Aussie Divers Phuket takes certified divers on a three-dive day, leaving the pier at about 08:00 and returning around 18:00. Ask the shop for the current price. Racha Yai also has a snorkelling stop for people who do not dive.
The King Cruiser is a car ferry that hit Anemone Reef and went down on 4 May 1997. It lies about 31 to 32 m below the surface, which makes it a dive for advanced divers only. In the monsoon months the sea is rough, visibility suffers and operators cancel departures.
A forest morning
Bang Pae waterfall lies inside the Khao Phra Thaeo protected forest. Foreign adults pay about 200 THB and children about 100 THB, and the level path to the pool is a 10 to 15 minute stroll. A gibbon rehabilitation project stands near the start of the trail. Its visiting rules vary from one source to the next, so confirm them locally.
Before you swim anywhere
The west-coast beaches (Patong, Karon, Kata, Kamala, Surin, Bang Tao and Nai Harn) have rip currents, and foreign visitors drown there every monsoon season, roughly May to October. Rips can also appear in other months. Enter the water only inside the red-and-yellow flags, where lifeguards are on duty. When a red flag is up, stay out. Where no flags or lifeguards exist, treat the beach as a place to sit rather than swim. If a rip carries you away from shore, swim across it parallel to the beach and do not fight it. Alcohol and swimming are a bad mix, and rainy-season jellyfish can sting dangerously.
The border and far-south areas named in UK and US advisories are a long way from Phuket. On the island itself, plan around sea conditions, hire scooters and inflated fares.
Getting there and getting around
Phuket Smart Bus charges a flat 100 THB from the airport to Rawai, calling at Patong, Karon and Kata. The Patong to Bus Terminal 2 run through Phuket Town is 50 THB, and the Dragon Line town shuttle costs nothing. Check the timetable for departure times, which change. Patong is 35 to 40 km from the airport, usually 45 to 60 minutes. Taxis from the airport desk run on the meter with a 100 THB airport fee on top.
